GPT-4 answered 74% of the questions correctly on a simulated Multistate Professional Responsibility test (MPRE), compared with an estimated 68% average among human test takers nationwide, according to a report released on Thursday by LegalOn Technologies — which sells AI software that reviews contracts. “Our study indicates that in the future it may be possible to develop AI to assist lawyers with ethical compliance and operate, where relevant, in alignment with lawyers’ professional responsibilities,” the study reads. It joins a growing body of research examining AI within legal education and attorney licensure. An earlier study found that the previous version of GPT-4 earned passing but not stellar scores on law school final exams. Another more latest study found that GPT-4 can pass the bar exam. Earlier this month, researchers found that access to GPT-4 improved speed on legal writing assignments but didn’t bolster the quality law students’ work. GPT-4 is a large language model from Microsoft-backed OpenAI that generates human-like text based on user queries. A spokesperson for the National Conference of Bar Examiners, which develops the MPRE, said that it could not assess the LegalOn report's claims that GPT-4 can pass its ethics test. "The legal profession is always evolving in its use of technology, and will continue to do so," said National Conference spokesperson Sophie Martin. She added that "attorneys have a unique set of skills that AI cannot currently match." Every state besides Wisconsin requires law students to pass the 60-multiple-choice MPRE before they are admitted to practice, in addition to passing the bar exam. Tested subjects include conflicts of interest, lawyer-client relationships and confidentiality. Most people take the MPRE while in law school. GPT-4 performed particularly well on questions about conflicts of interest, with a 91% rate of correct responses. It also answered 88% of questions about the client-lawyer relationship correctly. But its accuracy fell with questions on communications about legal services and safekeeping funds and other property, which it answered correctly a respective 71% and 72% of the time. “This research demonstrates for the first time that top-performing generative AI models can apply black-letter ethical rules as effectively as aspiring lawyers,” the study reads. One of the products to launch out of the Microsoft Ignite 2023 event is a tool that can create a photorealistic avatar of a person.Microsoft has introduced around 100 new services and updates as part of its AI-forward strategy, including key developments within its productivity and security offerings covering Windows, Microsoft 365, and Azure. The announcements were made at Microsoft Ignite 2023, the company’s annual conference for developers and IT professionals. Microsoft said industries are undergoing transformations. “As we reach the end of 2023, nearly every industry in Africa is undergoing a collective transformation, with estimates that AI could expand the economy by as much as 50 percent of current GDP by 2030 if the continent could capture just 10 percent of the global AI market.” AvatarOne of the products to launch out of the Microsoft Ignite 2023 event is a tool that can create a photorealistic avatar of a person and animate that avatar saying things that the person didn’t necessarily say. Called Azure AI Speech text-to-speech avatar allow users to create synthetic videos of a 2D photorealistic avatar speaking. Microsoft’s tool trains a model to drive the animation, while a separate text-to-speech model—either prebuilt or trained on the person’s voice—”reads” the script aloud. Avatars can speak in multiple languages. And, for chatbot scenarios, they can tap AI models like OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 to respond to off-script questions from customers. With the preview of Azure AI Studio, there is now a unified and trusted platform to help organisations more easily explore, build, test and deploy AI apps—all in one place. With Azure AI Studio, you can build your own copilots, train your own, or ground other foundational and open-source models with the data that you bring. CopilotMicrosoft also touched on Copilot for Microsoft 365, which it introduced eight months ago, to reduce digital debt and increase productivity so people can focus on the work that is uniquely human. Microsoft Copilot Studio is a new end-to-end conversational AI platform that allows organisations to build their own copilots from scratch or adapt out-of-the-box copilots with their own data, logic, and actions relevant to their business needs. Already, the company’s research, a combination of surveys and experiments, demonstrates significant productivity gains, with 70 percent of Copilot sharing that they were more productive and 68 percent saying it improved the quality of their work. Another 68 percent also say it helped jumpstart the creative process. Overall, users were 29 percent faster at specific tasks (searching, writing, and summarising). “We are taking the next step to simplify the user experience and make Copilot more accessible to everyone. Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise will now simply become Copilot. It has foundational capabilities, like the ability to answer questions, create content, and reason over data. And it has web grounding, so it always has access to the latest information,” Microsoft said. The rise of OpenAI’s ChatGPT saw generative AI make headlines for its ability to understand questions posed in plain English and then craft in-depth answers, which appear as if they were written by a person. Microsoft’s Copilot brings generative AI to the desktop, primarily designed to help Windows users with day-to-day tasks rather than be a jack-of-all-trades like ChatGPT. It’s built into the new Bing Chat and was made available in Windows 11 at the start of November via the free Windows 11 2023 Update, also known as 23H2. Meanwhile, Microsoft 365 enterprise users can pay to add Copilot to Office tools like Word, Excel and Outlook. These features will gradually become available to all Microsoft 365 users. Using Microsoft Copilot to answer questionsPut to the test on the new Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 running the Windows 11 2023 Update, Copilot appears as a new “Copilot (preview)” icon in the taskbar. Clicking the icon opens a menu on the right, where you can select whether you want a more creative, precise or balanced conversation style. Along with a few examples of what Microsoft Copilot can do, you’re presented with an “Ask me anything” window where you can type to engage with Copilot or click the microphone to speak your query aloud. In this way, Copilot replaces Microsoft’s ill-fated Cortana smart assistant. Like all smart assistants, you can ask Copilot for simple objective facts, such as “How tall is Mount Kosciuszko” and generally trust the results. You can also ask Copilot more complex subjective questions, such as “What’s the best holiday itinerary for two weeks in Australia?” The result is several hundred words long, written in plain English and with links to the sources. If you want more detail, you can ask a follow-up question, such as “What if I want to swim with dolphins?” and it understands the context – knowing that you’re still talking about an Australian holiday. It will even provide you links to places where you can swim with dolphins in Australia, including their TripAdvisor rating. Copilot is also built into the Edge browser, letting you ask questions and request summaries of pages. You can also use Copilot to control your computer, such as opening apps, turning on features and getting guidance on how to use different aspects of Windows. Generating written contentAlong with answering your questions, Microsoft Copilot can also write content, letting you specify details such as style and length. Here it can be a significant time-saver, at least when it comes to writing first drafts, although obviously it’s open to abuse. Copilot understands the structure, style and requirements for different kinds of documents. For example, you can ask it to write a cover letter for a job application as a high school librarian or an email to the mayor requesting a new local dog park. In both situations, Copilot refers to its efforts as a “possible” option, while adding generic details and examples which clearly aren’t accurate – presumably expecting you to fill in the blanks. You can hone the results by including more details, such as “write an email to the mayor requesting a new dog park in the City of Moonee Valley”. The result is far more customised but still can’t be trusted without fact-checking. For example, Copilot addresses the email to the previous mayor of Moonee Valley, cites a survey from a non-existent local dog owners association and refers to a vacant lot on the corner of two streets that don’t actually intersect in the real world. You clearly can’t take everything it says at face value. You’re on safer ground if you ask Copilot to stick to more established facts, such as “write a 100-word review of the novel 1984“. Once again, you can hone the results, such as “write a 100-word review of the novel 1984 for a primary school book report” which adapts the language and themes accordingly. It does a very impressive job – although you’re assuming it hasn’t made any obvious mistakes – and offers a taste of the challenges that generative AI will present teachers. Image creationMicrosoft Copilot can also create images from scratch, plus it will work with applications like Microsoft Paint and Photos. Asking Copilot to “create an image of a whale” generates four options, after which you can ask for changes such as “make it fly a kite”. However ludicrous, Copilot will do its best to bring your ideas to life. You can also drop existing images into Copilot and ask it to analyse them. Generative AI is also coming to Microsoft Paint as a new “Cocreator” feature, as well as Photos, but these are currently only available to Windows 11 beta users and haven’t been released to the general public yet. | ||||||||
