Since there were several so-called subject areas of Psychology, Anthropology, History, and Sociology, and more needed and capable of making their contribution to this new area of âorganizational Berhaviourâ methods of research in the âOrganisational Behaviourâ area took time to crystalize.
Â Feedback from the field established that understanding âOrganisationsâ required insights into the ability to produce âresultsâ. This itself needed an appreciation of the âstructureâ and âprocessesâ of organisations. Disciplinary gaps and overlaps could not be allowed to blur the clarity into appreciating which actions would need to take place in organisations for effectiveness. The effectiveness of learning in educational institutions would be measured by its applicability in the world of work.
Gradually disciplinary conflicts reduced its interface for the requirement of understanding behavior in organisations. Several focused studies revealed that where behavior would be similar in many ways in an organization it would have variations say from one management domain to another. A âfinance manâ would need a particular type of orientation as a man in the marketing area or operations research domain would need different kinds of tools. As the number of learning institutions grew and found an orientation of their own it became obvious that each âdivisionâ of the learning organization would need an approach with a multi-disciplinary perspective. The need for an âarea approachâ was widely recognized. Thus in educational institutions âManagement Facultyâ acquired a character of its own. The use of the word âdepartmentâ was considerably reduced and instead the word âareaâ became more common. Thus, it is that management institutions grew up to have an organizational behaviour area rather than an organizational behaviour department.
This approach affected almost every contributing input to management learning and decision-making. Illustratively in management institutions, say, the âfinance areaâ emerged which subsumed under it everything from accounting to auditing. Similar observations could be made about the operations research area, marketing area, or, for that matter, anything that became an input to managerial skill formulation. To sum up, therefore, the important thing is to recognize the interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary character of management education. This is the foundation of any management institution that seeks to create an ambience of learning for management learning.

This rapid evolution means some institutions are still a little behind when it comes to equipping their learning spaces with the tools and technologies that modern students now demand.
How can educators keep up with todayâs cutting-edge trends and expectations, while still creating spaces that offer outstanding learning experiences now and long into the future?Â
The first major step is to explore whatâs currently trending in higher education.
Seamless accessibility and connectivityÂ
Higher educationâs focus must currently be on accessibility. Campuses need to have an agile and accommodating approach to the student population, as the ability to stream, broadcast, and capture teaching sessions is critical for student success and different learning styles.
Studentsâ ability to connect in the classroom or remotely during or after a class is also vital to their success. AR doesnât offer a âone-size-fits-allâ experience; however, the technology needs to appear that way for ease of use and the capability to easily transmit curriculum. As students grow accustomed to creating their own virtual environments and interfaces outside of the classroom, the ability and flexibility to create an experience tailored to everyone will become the expectation.Â
Automating different learning processesÂ
Some students might hope that theyâll no longer need to memorise or work on math equations, for instance, is tools like AI are available. For those students, I have some bad news! Understanding concepts, such as mental arithmetic, will still be necessaryâbut fortunately, the process may not be as mentally taxing as math becomes more and more automated.Â Â
Just as in the past software took the place of accounting, order processing, and architectural planning, tools for creating and processing will become more intelligent in this way. Goals and creativity will still begin at the human level, but new technologies may provide a different way and timeline to achieve the desired result.Â Â
DesigningÂ tomorrowâs smart spaces, today
To future-proof learning spaces, Iâd prioritise the creation of highly flexible areas that provide for everything from rudimentary to extraordinary use cases. In other words, traditional lecture-style rooms that can seamlessly transition into more sophisticated spaces.Â Â
The roomsâ enhanced systems should offer augmented video, enriched audio, and comfortable seating/furniture options that provide inclusive event and immersive sessions for the learner to experience sense-based learning options. Gaming and e-sports already provide these types of experiences with curved monitors, headphones and mics, and furniture that cocoons the person, making them one with the session.
These environments will become more prevalent in classrooms to facilitate more immersive education.Â
Keeping tech simple and functional
However, the installation of all this advanced technology is meaningless if itâs then too complicated for everyday teachers to use. Systems still need to remain simple, functional, and appropriate for the type of class experience.
As faculty members rely heavily on the technological components of a classroom to share curriculum, it needs to remain basic to facilitate to subject matter, rather than become the focus/issue of a session.Â
Training faculty to use the systems, standardising the user experience, and offering tools for help/assistance are all great starting points for a better experience for both teachers and students, and will ensure less disruption to teaching time. Plus, when a teacher knows what to expect and is comfortable and familiar with the system, they will use it more regularly and take advantage of its features.Â
When support and helpdesk create efficient processes and procedures, there is less downtime in classrooms and more faculty satisfaction. Setting up maintenance practices, hiring knowledgeable tech staff, and offering reliable solutions can make the difference. The reality is that solid campus technology, less down-time, and well-placed solutions, features, and functionality all help to facilitate greater student enrolment and retention.Â
Modern higher education has moved towards visual aids, interoperability and interactivity. And with the seamless technology now readily available to enable this, higher education institutions must begin leveraging it to break down barriers to progress the industry alongside students and lecturers.Â

Microsoft Announces General Availability of Copilot, Expands Data Protection to Education Users
Microsoft announced recently that its pilot AI program, Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise, launched in February 2023, is no longer in beta and has been renamed as Microsoft Copilot. It is now available for general use.
Copilot uses the GPT-4 AI large language model (LLM) that helps users with tasks such as "drafting an e-mail, summarizing PDFs and articles, generating images with DALL-E 3, learning new skills, and getting answers to complex questions," Microsoft said.
Beginning in early 2024, Microsoft Copilot will be available to all faculty and higher education students ages 18 and above, the company said. These users will receive commercial-level data protection at no extra cost, backed by Microsoft's Universal Commercial License Terms for Online Services and subject to its Customer Copyright Commitment. That protection means:
Account holders can currently sign in to Copilot here. An updated and renamed user interface is planned for rollout to customers over time, the company said.
In addition, Microsoft has expanded Copilot for Microsoft 365 eligibility to include education users. Starting Jan. 1, 2024, enterprise pricing will be available at $30 per user per month for all faculty and staff.
While those with Copilot already enabled need do nothing, those who are new to it or need help transitioning from the Bing Chat interface can download an adoption kit containing training materials and ready-to-use e-mail templates.
