‘I have always argued for this whenever I have to review somebody’s promotion to vice president. I always ask, who have they mentored? I use it in the evaluation of a person [because] they should be paying it forward,’ Juniper Networks’ Chief Technology Officer Raj Yavatkar tells CRN.
Closing The Gap
By day, Juniper Networks Chief Technology Officer Raj Yavatkar drives product and service innovation around intelligent networking, security, network virtualization, hybrid cloud, and mobile edge, to name a few. But he’s also keenly passionate about the power of mentorship and helping others realize and chart their leadership path in tech.
Early in his own IT career, Yavatkar was alarmed by the fact that many engineers were struggling to map out their careers and find ways to advance that didn’t immediately translate to leaving the company to find the next gig. It sparked an idea: the tech veteran began teaching career development classes and created an internal career development template, which has been adopted by several the of the world’s largest tech companies. These days, Yavatkar is deeply involved in Juniper Networks’ mentorship program and has helped the Juniper HR team launch new programs geared toward diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and advancing women in technology.
Since then, Yavatkar has been a firm believer that effective mentorship can help attract and retain technical talent, especially amid the talent gap that tech companies and channel partners are grappling today.
Yavatkar spoke with CRN about creating his own tech development courses — which he has successfully implemented at Intel, VMware, Google Cloud, and now, Juniper Networks — how tech leaders can identify and develop talent at all levels through mentorship, and how mentorship can pave the way for greater diversity in tech.
Gina Narcisi is a senior editor covering the networking and telecom markets for CRN.com. Prior to joining CRN, she covered the networking, unified communications and cloud space for TechTarget. She can be reached at gnarcisi@thechannelcompany.com.

Juniper Networks Inc. will pay $3 million to settle an ERISA lawsuit filed by participants in a company 401(k) plan who alleged, among other things, that plan fiduciaries charged "unreasonable" record-keeping fees and unreasonably high managed account fees, according to a Nov. 11 filing in a U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif.
The parties reported Sept. 15 that they had reached an agreement in principle in Reichert et al. vs. Juniper Networks et al., but they didn't disclose the terms at that time.
"Each defendant specifically denies the allegations that it breached any fiduciary duty or any other provisions of ERISA in connection with the administration of the plan, the administrative fees or expenses incurred by the plan, or the investments in the plan, at any time, and further denies that it in any way failed to act prudently or loyally as to the plan's participants and beneficiaries," the settlement document said.
The participants sued in August 2021 and later amended their complaint to also include allegations that fiduciaries didn't adequately review the plan's investment lineup for costs, kept certain investments that were more expensive and/or worse-performing than similar or identical options in the marketplace and failed to provide adequate investment information to participants.
U.S. District Judge James Donato rejected in April 2022 a petition by the defendants to dismiss the case, and he must approve the settlement.
"When the benefits conferred by the settlement are weighed against the attendant risks of continuing to prosecute the action, plaintiffs' counsel believe that the settlement represents a reasonable and fair resolution of the claims of the settlement class," the settlement document said.
Current and former participants in the plan from Aug. 11, 2015, through the preliminary court approval of the settlement are covered by the agreement.
The Juniper Networks Inc. 401(k) Plan, Sunnyvale, Calif., had $1.9 billion in assets as of Dec. 31, 2021, according to the latest Form 5500.

Tapping Juniper Apstra for the build-out of its latest data center, Indonet will further uplift networking infrastructure across Indonesia to accelerate the country’s digital growth
JAKARTA, Indonesia, November 30, 2022--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), a leader in secure, AI-driven networks, today announced that PT IndoInternetTbk (Indonet), an Indonesian digital infrastructure provider, has selected Juniper Apstra to help automate, modernize and facilitate an experience-first expansion of its network infrastructure. Through managed automated network provisioning and monitoring, Apstra has already delivered Indonet an estimated 20% in cost-savings efficiency.
As the world’s largest archipelago, Indonesia has established a reputation as a preferred data center location in Southeast Asia due to its strategic location across vital shipping lanes, high levels of internet penetration and vibrant digital-first economy. To capitalize on this, the government has rolled out ambitious initiatives to accelerate economic growth, fueled by the urgency for digital transformation across industry sectors like manufacturing, finance and healthcare.
With digital transformation underway, the demand for reliable and scalable colocation services has spiked – with spending in the capital, Jakarta, alone expected to reach $938M by 2027 at a projected five-year CAGR of 22.7%. As Indonesia’s first Internet Service Provider, Indonet has built a reputation for providing scalable and reliable digital infrastructure solutions and is poised to capture more of that ongoing growth.
Indonet utilized Apstra to validate the design, deployment and operation of the EVPN/VXLAN overlay and IP fabric underlay of its latest data center, both built on Juniper QFX Series Switches. The use of validated templates and zero-touch provisioning has resulted in reduced deployment times and reliable data center operations, allowing Indonet to significantly streamline the day-to-day management of its data center networks and unify them in a virtual environment seamlessly.
As the only solution in the industry supporting a multivendor environment, Apstra can manage data centers built with different vendors, simplifying Indonet’s network operations while accelerating its scalability. Not only has Apstra dramatically reduced tedious manual tasks with repeatable blueprints, but it has also freed up skilled engineers at the company for more strategic work.
Additionally, the latest networking upgrades supported by Juniper’s Professional Services and Advanced Services empower Indonet to better respond to customer needs with greater agility, providing ultra-low latency and highly reliable cloud solutions required to power the country’s enterprises – the backbone of Indonesia’s economic growth.
Supporting Quotes:
"Our vision is to become the digital infrastructure enabler of choice in Indonesia. Our partnership with Juniper Networks has modernized our network, streamlined the management of our data centers and, most importantly, helped us predict problems before they arise. This forms a strong foundation that will enable us to expand our footprint, respond to our customers with great agility and, ultimately, help them to fully capture the growth potential Indonesia has to offer."
"Juniper Networks is excited to partner with and grow Indonet’s network as they build out a simplified, reliable and efficient infrastructure across Indonesia. Apstra has greatly facilitated the automation and expansion across their data center networks and we look forward to continuing our journey together as they transform into a modern digital infrastructure provider, further fueling Indonesia’s growth momentum."

Jenny Boyd, who was twice married to Fleetwood Mac founding member and drummer Mick Fleetwood, was the inspiration for the Donovan song “Jennifer Juniper.” Here’s what the former model said about the track and her relationship with Donovan.

Mick Fleetwood’s ex-wife, Jenny Boyd, was the inspiration for the Donovan song ‘Jennifer Juniper’
Jenny Boyd inspired the Donovan song “Jennifer Juniper” years before she married Mick Fleetwood for the first time. The model was married to the Fleetwood Mac star from 1970 to 1976, and they were remarried briefly between 1977 and 1978.
Boyd is the sister of model Pattie Boyd, who was married to Eric Clapton and George Harrison. “Jennifer Juniper” was written in 1968, before Jenny married Fleetwood and Pattie married Clapton. But Pattie was married to Harrison at the time of its recording. Jenny, whose real name is Helen Mary Boyd, was nicknamed after her sister Pattie’s favorite doll.
Although Jenny was not yet married to Fleetwood, she had already met him. The former couple first encountered each other when Jenny was just 15 years old.
The drummer recounted their first meeting in his book, My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac. “I met Jenny when I was still in the Cheynes,” he wrote (via Song Facts). “I’d see Jenny coming home from school, a stunning 15-year-old in white stockings. I lost my heart to her immediately. I had a massive crush on her, but was so shy I couldn’t say anything to her. I knew then, at age 16, that this was the girl I was destined to marry.”
Jenny Boyd explained how she inspired the song ‘Jennifer Juniper’
Mick Fleetwood’s ex-wife opened up about how she inspired the Donovan song “Jennifer Juniper.”
“I was working at this boutique and Donovan walked in – I had met him before,” Jenny Boyd told Fox News in 2020. “We just started talking and we ended up seeing each other a couple of times. I remember the second time we went out, he told me, ‘I wrote a song for you.’ We sat down, he took out his guitar and then he started singing ‘Jennifer Juniper.’”
Jenny said she always thinks about the special moment whenever she hears the hit song. “It was the most extraordinary thing because I was really shy in those days,” she explained. “I didn’t even know where to look. But it was absolutely wonderful. It’s been one of those things that have stayed with me these 50 or so years. Every time I hear it, it takes me straight back to that moment.”
Jenny added, “It was the 60s. We were so innocent and there was this idealism that we could change the world. It’s a very precious song to me.”
Mick Fleetwood’s ex-wife said she and Donovan never had a romantic relationship
Jenny Boyd said her relationship with Donovan was never serious, despite him writing “Jennifer Juniper” for her.
In her interview with Fox News, the former model was asked about their brief romance. Although Jenny admitted to Donovan’s crush on her, she said the musician was never her boyfriend.
“We kissed, but it didn’t go any further than that,” Mick Fleetwood’s ex-wife said. “He really liked me and I really liked him. But we became really lovely friends. He wasn’t a proper boyfriend.”

A circle of First Nations elders meets here periodically. The hotel also displays fine Indigenous art and, on request, organizes cultural experiences such as smudging ceremonies to cleanse the spirit and nature walks to discover plants.
Thinking ahead, Juniper has partnered with EcoStay (ecostayforest.ca) to preserve this precious landscape of crystal-capped mountains, pristine lakes and hardy forests, where some tree root stems go back an astounding 14,000 years.
EcoStay focuses on global reforestation, soil preservation and protection of natural habitats. Guests can donate $2 a night (it’s optional) to support green ventures. And the hotel’s eco-operations include water and waste recycling, non-chemical cleaning products, low-waste kitchen practices and energy conservation.

The hotel: Opened 60 years ago as the Timberline Inn, this vintage lodge was always ahead of its time. Two kilometres from downtown Banff, it is a peaceful retreat built on a hilltop with a modernist design.
It captures snowy woodland views on one side and majestic alpine scenes on the other, though that dramatic vantage point also overlooks Highway 1. Juniper is adjacent to Banff’s wildlife corridor, and you won’t even need binoculars to spot animals. Deer graze on the property, and you can watch them from your hotel room or from Juniper Bistro.
The 52 guest rooms still have a mid-century look (with some well-worn original furniture, and some reproductions). The accommodations are basic, but perked up with mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs and coffee machines, and some rooms have balconies. The spacious, top-notch Sky View suite is an updated penthouse for up to 10 people in three bedrooms, with a full kitchen and a living room for entertaining.

The cuisine: The much-loved Juniper Bistro has swept Banff’s Best of the Bow awards for just about everything — views, patio, local flavours, brunch/breakfast and dinner.
The wall-to-wall windows look out over the exceptional mountain vista, and the kitchen is known for innovative, fresh cuisine. A great combo.
Juniper Bistro follows the hotel’s eco-theme, sourcing food locally, especially from regenerative farms. Highlights include the Sudo Farms beet salad, which locals voted the best salad in town, plus Alberta pork chops or short ribs, vegan hummus with kale and mushrooms, or brie and a baguette.

The Juniper Burger is so popular that it’s even on the breakfast/brunch menu, along with eggs Benedict atop salmon or braised rabbit, and smoked salmon with lemon crème fraîche. The amazing French toast (which will hold you for a full day of sports) is served with stewed apples, bourbon, cheese, apricot coulis and pure, local maple. The menu is often served until 1 or 2 p.m.

The mountains: About one-quarter of Banff’s four million annual visitors come during winter, most for the huge variety of adventure activities, including superlative downhill skiing and riding at SkiBig3, which launched its season with early storms in November.
There is something for everyone at this formidable alpine trio. Banff Sunshine has a summit peak of 2,730 metres, and the highest-elevation non-glacier skiing and the longest non-glacier season in Canada (often until the end of May). Lake Louise Ski Resort recently expanded and is now the third-largest ski area in Canada. Mount Norquay is the oldest lift-serviced area in Canada (since 1926), prized for exhilarating day and night skiing and snowboarding, plus outstanding snow tubing.
