Earlier this month, a peculiar bug installed the HP Smart app onto PCs without permission. Windows added the app to computers without any HP devices connected or printer drivers installed. The same bug also renamed printers, regardless of brand, to be listed as HP printers.
Microsoft confirmed the issue and promised a fix. That fix is now here, though it's in a different form than many Windows bug fixes. Rather than a Windows update rolling out with a fix, Microsoft has made a separate tool available that will uninstall the HP Smart app and fix the names of your printers.
Specifically, the Microsoft Printer Metadata Troubleshooter Tool will restore the model information and icons of your printer and remove the "HP LaserJet M101-M106" model information (unless that's the exact model of printer you have). The tool will also uninstall the HP Smart app if that app should not have been installed on your PC.

A strange bug gets a strange fix
The bug Microsoft just fixed is rather strange. Windows PCs without an HP printer or any HP device connected installed the HP Smart app, seemingly at random. The issue would also rename printers, regardless of their brand, to be listed as HP printers. Many were upset by the bug, since it meant software appeared on their PC without permission. The issue also locked some users out of advanced printer features, since their printer had been mislabeled.
The fix for Windows installing an app without permission is to make people obtain and install another tool. The Microsoft Printer Metadata Troubleshooter Tool takes up very little space, the entire obtain is 877.7 KB. But still, it's somewhat ironic that you have to obtain something and install it to fix a bug that downloaded and installed an app without permission.
Even with the tool installed, applying the fix requires using Command Prompt as an administrator. Tech savvy users will be fine entering code into Command Prompt, but many people have never used Command Prompt. More importantly, people shouldn't have to use Command Prompt and a separate tool to fix a Windows bug.
The bad news is that it’s not quite a straightforward solution, as rather unusually, Microsoft requires the installation of a standalone troubleshooting utility in order to facilitate repairs.
As we’ve previously reported, the problem is that PCs are getting the HP Smart app installed when they haven’t got an HP printer connected – or even a printer at all, in some cases – and printers are being renamed as a specific HP LaserJet (whatever their model).
As a result of this, some functionality is failing to work with affected printers, and there’s been quite a lot of head scratching going on (especially for those who don’t have a printer at all, who are apparently suffering at the hands of the Microsoft Print to PDF icon being renamed).
At any rate, the fix is here as noted, but you’ll have to download the aforementioned troubleshooting tool from Microsoft and run it.
This will reverse any printer renaming which has taken place, and reinstate the correct icons for printers, and uninstall the HP Smart app if it shouldn’t have been installed.

The theory behind this bug was that the printer weirdness was happening because of incorrect metadata supplied in a Windows update, which led to printers being wrongly identified as an HP LaserJet.
It seems that idea was bang on as the tool which brings in the fix is called the ‘Microsoft Printer Metadata Troubleshooter.’
Normally, we’d expect the fix to be piped through via Windows Update, so as noted, it’s rather unusual to have to go through a separate download. It’s a slightly clunky process, in short, but at least it is a fix, which was much-needed for some folks, because in some cases, this bug could prevent functions beyond basic printing from working.

Hewlett-Packard solution providers are willing to overlook Margaret "Meg" Whitman's lack of channel experience as she steps up to run the company as its new president and CEO, but they are very clear about what she needs to do to restore some of the channel luster HP has lost in the last year.
HP on Thursday fired Leo Apotheker after his 11-month run as president and CEO, and replaced him with Whitman, who prior to the appointment was most well-known for building eBay into the star of the on-line auction business during her 10-year tenure as that company's former president and CEO.
Solution providers' initial reaction to the hiring of Whitman was generally positive, with several HP partners calling her a brilliant executive who can be expected to make the right decisions for HP despite her lack of channel and enterprise experience.
However, many of those same partners said the big test for Whitman will be how she addresses HP's accurate inconsistent messages to customers as a whole and the needs of the channel in particular.
The appointment of Whitman as president and CEO of HP is great news, said Rich Baldwin, CIO and chief strategy officer at Nth Generation, a San Diego-based solution provider and long-term HP partner.
"I think HP needs decisive leadership now," Baldwin said. "Meg had a track record of doing big things at eBay. I hope she continues that record at HP."
Baldwin said that he is not concerned about Whitman's previous focus on the consumer market and lack of experience in the channel.
"The message is loud and clear: HP's success has been as a channel company," he said. "She's smart, and she's going to take HP in that direction. Leo was taking it in the opposite direction. But it will take some time to change directions."
One solution provider, who requested anonymity, said that HP's fortunes can only move forward under Whitman, as long as she focuses on the basics.
"Up's the only way it can go. I anticipate a much more 'Hurdian' style from Whitman," the solution provider said, referring to former HP President and CEO Mark Hurd. "I think she'll get back to basics from the salesmanship side. It will work well as long as she doesn't say anything that hurts HP. If she says nothing at all, things will be better."
Next: Asking Whitman To Hear Out The Partner Community
Whitman has a number of challenges facing her, the solution provider said. HP has been wandering in some of its key markets, with a storage line that is long in the tooth, the public fight with Oracle that's turning HP customers away from HP servers, and the disruption caused by HP's decision to explore selling or spining off its Personal Systems Group (PSG), the solution provider said.
"The best thing we can do is to get to a decision on PSG as fast as possible," said Whitman, Thursday on a conference call with financial analysts. "This decision is not like fine wine. It is not going to get better with age. We have got to do the analysis, get to the decision and then tell our customers and the market what it is we are going to do."
Whitman should also consider canceling HP's decision to acquire U.K.-based Autonomy for over $10 billion, the solution provider said. "It's not necessarily a bad deal," the solution provider said. "If I were Whitman, I think I'd find a better way to spend the cash. Maybe invest more in PSG."
Whitman on the conference call said she will also review the Autonomy deal, though she noted, "From what I know now, I think the strategy is right and the initiatives we undertook on August 18 are right."
While Whitman's experience has primarily been in the consumer market, that does not necessarily mean she would not be able to lead HP, the solution provider said.
Apotheker sent mixed signals to channel partners recently, including a push a few months ago for partners to invest in mobility and tablet PCs and then last month deciding to kill its TouchPad tablet PC and get out of PCs, the solution provider said.
"To me, that is more disruptive to the channel than Meg's lack of channel experience," the solution provider said. "Meg has to stick to the nuts and bolts, and then she can do well. She has a lot of smart people there to advise her."
Paul Hilbert, principal at Englewood Cliffs, N.J.-based HP partner Network Doctor, said Whitman is a "proven leader" and capable of taking the ball and running with it. Hilbert added, however, that there are several things Whitman should do off the bat to get partners excited about the "new HP."
"She should see what the community wants," he said. "That should be her first order of business. See what the partners want from her."
For his part, Hilbert said he wants more integration across product lines, and he wants HP to take a less buttoned-up approach. With Whitman's experience in consumer and entertainment, she should be able to take cues from market leaders like Apple and give HP's products a fresh coat of paint and make them more attractive to partners and customers, he said.
At the same time, Whitman has her work cut out for her, righting HP's massive tablet misstep which led it to discontinue the TouchPad tablet due to poor sales, despite some solid reviews, Hilbert said.
"The flop on the tablet needs to be fixed," he said. "They really got people excited about that."
Next: Make The Call On PSG
And while Whitman lacks experience in the IT channel, Hilbert said he's confident that she can lead partners to success.
"HP has always been committed to the channel," he said. "I don't see that being a problem."
Harry Zarek, president and CEO of Compugen, a Richmond Hill, Ont.-based solution provider, said the best thing Whitman can do immediately is reassure HP's channel that HP is stable.
"It's really about communicate, communicate, communicate," Zarek said. "Talk to the channel, and communicate very clearly."
That communication has to go beyond the channel, too, he said.
"Stability is the key message for her," Zarek added. "So she needs to make sure she takes the same message about stability to the broader market, to main street, to all the communities interested in HP. There are longer-term things she will need, but not now. Get back to work."
Whitman and HP should also decide on PSG's future early on, Zarek urged.
"The longer they wait, every day, is not helpful," he said. "It's not flip a coin and decide what to do, but I think when they do make their decision, that will at least instill some confidence, and they can share some of the reasoning behind the decision they make. I think that's really important."
One of HP's top solution providers urged Whitman to be as clear as possible on HP's channel relationships and how HP will incentivize partners to stay aggressive behind HP products and services.
"[Hurd] was really aggressive, and the channel really liked that market aggression," the partner said."If Meg can take a lesson, that's to say what [HP] is going to do with the channel to defend it in the market. The tone from Leo was not necessarily channel-embracing. They talked about the channel, but I don't think they were leveraging the channel."
NEXT: Partners' Wish List For HP's Board
Some solution providers also hope that HP's Board of Directors start to show more leadership than it has shown in the way it handled HP's relationships with Hurd and Apotheker.
One HP solution provider said neither Apotheker nor HP's Board seemed to strategize based on feedback from HP's lieutenants.
"They'd better be listening to the people on the inside and what challenges they are going through," he said. "Those senior executives are the ones who are aware of channel feedback and probably aware that the market's looking for a stabilized product roadmap and a stabilized team."
Another long-term HP solution provider said HP needs a board that can start doing its job. "The board needs to keep HP out of the headlines," the solution provider said. "I'm hoping the board will get its act together. We just need consistency and predictability."
Zarek said that despite the overall criticism of HP's board, it's definitely a plus that the board acted quickly to replace Apotheker.
"Kudos to the HP board for reacting quickly and making a decision quickly," he said. "If they'd had an interim [CEO], or no one at the head for a time, it would have made it harder."

HP’s board of directors appointed one of its own, Meg Whitman, to replace him. Whitman, the former president and CEO of eBay and an unsuccessful California gubernatorial candidate in 2010, joined the HP board earlier this year.
"We are fortunate to have someone of Meg Whitman’s caliber and experience step up to lead HP,’ said Ray Lane, who Thursday moved from non-executive chairman to executive chairman of HP’s board, in a statement. "We are at a critical moment and we need renewed leadership to successfully implement our strategy and take advantage of the market opportunities ahead. Meg is a technology visionary with a proven track record of execution. She is a strong communicator who is customer focused with deep leadership capabilities. Furthermore, as a member of HP’s board of directors for the past eight months, Meg has a solid understanding of our products and markets."
Apotheker also resigned his seat on the board, the company said.
Many channel partners of the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company are pleased with the turn of events. Consensus opinion among several HP partners contacted by CRN is that Apotheker didn't show enough interest in the channel and made some questionable decisions during his brief tenure at the helm that negatively impacted their businesses.
In particular, HP solution providers are displeased with the uncertainty created in August when HP unceremoniously disclosed that it is considering a sale or spin-off of its $42 billion Personal Systems Group, a revelation that partners say has put channel deals in jeopardy. Some are also disgruntled over HP’s move to pull the much-ballyhooed HP TouchPad tablet from the market after just six weeks.
Some HP partners are downright giddy that Apotheker is no longer with HP.
"I am ecstatic," said Sam Haffar, president and co-CEO of Computex, one of HP's top enterprise partners and a CRN Tech Elite 250 solution provider based in Houston, Tex. "This guy was fired by SAP and was unemployed when HP hired him. [HP's board] should have done their due diligence. Now they get rid of him in less than a year. It should have happened sooner!"
Leigh Carpenter, director of strategic services for Nth Generation Computing, a San Diego-based HP partner, said Apotheker didn't really connect with the HP channel, despite making appearances at the major HP events. "For us, he seemed a lot less in-touch with partners [than his predecessor],’ Carpenter said. While she couldn’t put her finger on exactly what caused the disconnect, Carpenter said that ’it just felt like Mark Hurd was more hands-on with partners."

Apotheker's inability to establish strong partner ties took its toll in HP's sales trenches, according to Haffar. "When they lost focus on us, we lost focus on them," he said. "They were a much more focused strategic partner for us before Apotheker, and they lost a lot of talent in our region to competitors as a result. Replacing that talent is going to take a long time."
Mont Phelps, CEO of NWN, a fast-growing HP partner headquartered in Waltham, Mass., said Apotheker’s reign has resulted in damage to the relationship HP has with its channel partners.
"I congratulate the board for being decisive and making the change," Phelps said. "The events of the last year have strained HP's relationship with the channel and it is important that one of the new CEO's top priorities is to rebuild that trust and engagement with partners. HP has got to get beyond this and focus on communication and trust and building the business."
Many HP partners were puzzled -- and in some cases, disappointed -- when HP hired Apotheker last September. Some openly questioned whether Apotheker would maintain Hurd's laser focus on the channel, noting that he hadn't distinguished himself as a channel-savvy leader during his 20 year career at SAP.
In fact, SAP's hybrid direct-indirect sales model was a major source of frustration under Apotheker's leadership at the software company, several SAP partners told CRN last year. "Under his reign, I don't think SAP was super-partner friendly," said one solution provider.
Questions about Apotheker's ability to effectively lead HP have been swirling since the company’s Discover conference in June, according to an executive with one of HP's enterprise partners. "He was on stage at Discover with a TouchPad, touting the ability for HP to integrate how people use technology personally and professionally. And now, that seems to be off the table," said the source, who requested anonymity.
Indeed, HP's decision to kill the TouchPad just six weeks after its launch sent shockwaves through the channel. HP had been aggressively positioning the tablet, and WebOS, as major services drivers for partners, and many VARs had made the decision to invest in building mobility practices.
But HP's decision to explore a spin-off or sale of PSG came as an even bigger surprise, particularly for longtime partners.
"He presided over some of the biggest blunders I have ever seen. If you tried to destroy value in a company you couldn't do it as fast as he did," said another top HP partner, who requested anonymity.
However, the partner said he's heartened that HP's board has finally come to its senses. "I was starting to wonder if the board knew what was happening in the field," the source said. "I'm glad they finally manned up and made the decision to get rid of him instead of digging the company deeper and deeper into a hole."

Soon after joining HP, Apotheker declared his intention to build HP's services and software capabilities. But HP's decision to bid $10.3 billion to acquire Autonomy, a developer of information management and infrastructure software, has triggered a near-revolt with investors who believe HP is grossly overpaying for the Cambridge, U.K.-based outfit.
Travis Fisher, executive vice president at Inacom Information Systems, a Salisbury, Md.-based solution provider, is baffled by the moves HP has made under Apotheker's watch.
"Between the PSG uncertainty putting channel partners on edge, failing to give the WebOS vision a chance to flourish, and the seemingly expensive purchase of Autonomy, I can’t say his reputation has improved in my mind," Fisher said. "And I must admit, I don’t have good feelings about HP’s board for their choice, either."
Other partners concurred with Fisher’s assessment of Apotheker’s 11 months at HP’s helm.
"I think his performance for the first year speaks for itself," said Daniel Duffy, CEO of Valley Network Solutions, a Fresno, Calif.-based solution provider.
As for HP’s new CEO, Whitman, solution providers said she would be wise to develop a eager understanding of the channel.

SAN JOSE, CA, November 18, 2002 . . . Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) announced today that the Atmel USB 802.11b design has been selected by HP to provide an integrated Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) solution for select models of the recently announced HP iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 series. The Atmel reference design, utilizing the RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD), radio front end, is the highest performing USB 802.11b module solution available today.
Previously, WLAN solutions for the iPAQ were achieved by use of an expansion pack and a separate WLAN PCMCIA or CF card. The compact size of the Atmel/RFMD module has enabled HP to provide an integrated WLAN solution into the base iPAQ unit, which frees up expansion pack slots or eliminates a need for an expansion pack in many cases.
The Atmel solution provides a high performance solution with exceptional throughput and low power consumption. The low power consumption is critical in battery-powered products. Atmel has achieved a solution that not only conserves power, but also does not sacrifice performance.
