Killexams : Genesis Reveals Its Secrets to Success

The Genesis brand has been selling models since 2017, but only in the last two years has it begun to break through with new car buyers. This, despite headwinds from supply chain complications due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since 2020, the company has launched five vehicles: Genesis Electrified G80, Genesis G90, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70, Genesis Electrified GV70 and Genesis GV80. There's also been three concept car reveals: Genesis X, Genesis X Speedium Coupe and the Genesis X Convertible.

In 2020, Genesis sold 16,384 vehicles in the U.S. The following year the company tripled their sales to 49,630 units. Genesis North America's president and CEO Jose Muñoz told Newsweek he expects to see close to 60,000 new vehicle sales in 2022, "and we continue to have plans to grow in '23."

The reason for the sales growth isn't just a slew of new vehicles hitting dealer lots, though Munoz is quick to point out how strong the offerings have become in accurate years. "Without a doubt, I think we have a one of the best product portfolios in the industry. Very, very new and well accepted. And I think that is number one," he said.

Brand awareness and marketing has also helped move the ball. "Number two, we are definitely now a more into the 'above the line' ... meaning, we move from being kind of almost a secret. [Genesis is on] a little bit [of] social media ... we are also sometimes in mass media, because we have the size. And we're doing a good job in terms of positioning the brand in all the digital channels through our partner Innocean," said Muñoz.

The 2022 Genesis GV80 three-row SUV sits parked. Genesis

Genesis hired former Infiniti marketing and public relations head Wendy Orthman to lead its U.S. marketing efforts earlier this year.

The third tier of Genesis success has been the changes it has made to its distribution network, according to Muñoz.

"As a reminder, we used to have all dealers or Hyundai dealers selling Genesis. Step by step, we made a plan to focus on the main markets ... it's anti-intuitive, but you say, 'Hey, the more leaders the better,' but it's not like that.

"We've been able to reduce dramatically the number of dealers, so the dealers are now profitable, then they are investing in facilities. [In] the next few months [you] are going to see a lot of a key super-duper announcements, beautiful facilities in very premium locations. And then then we have been able to attract very, very strong deliverables to our front sights."

It's not just buyers that are standing up and taking notice. Professional industry watchers are impressed by what the company is offering.

"Genesis's ambition into becoming a serious luxury brand isn't going to slow down anytime soon. Essentially every single vehicle that's debuted and gone on sale in accurate years has been a stand-out, impressive product," Robby DeGraff, industry analyst at AutoPacific told Newsweek.

"Interior and exterior styling is world-class, there's an advanced assortment of premium features and tech and perhaps even more important is that the accompanying driving experience is so excellent too. All of this almost always at a take-home cost that beats the price of similar offerings from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi by longshot. Have you seen the X Convertible Concept? It's simply jaw-dropping. Renowned upscale German marques better be keeping watch closely."

Killexams : Genesis, the Troubled Crypto Lender, Hires a Restructuring Adviser

Genesis Global Capital, the troubled crypto lender, has hired the investment bank Moelis & Company to explore options including a potential bankruptcy, three people familiar with the situation said.

The people, who requested anonymity because the process is confidential, stressed that no final decisions had been made, and that it was still possible for the company to avert a bankruptcy filing.

Genesis had previously confirmed it brought on advisers to help address a liquidity crunch, including the consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal and the law firm Cleary Gottlieb. Moelis advised the crypto lender Voyager Digital on its bankruptcy filing in July.

“Our goal is to resolve the current situation without the need for filing a bankruptcy,” a spokesman for Genesis said, declining to comment on whether it had hired additional advisers.

Genesis, which is owned by the Digital Currency Group, has been under pressure from its creditors since the crypto exchange F.T.X. began to unravel this month. Genesis was a trading partner with FTX and said that $175 million of its assets were stuck at FTX when the exchange froze accounts shortly before filing for bankruptcy this month.

“This is an issue of liquidity and duration mismatch in the Genesis loan book,” Barry Silbert, Digital Currency Group’s founder and chief executive, said in a letter to clients on Tuesday afternoon. “Importantly, these issues have no impact on Genesis’ spot and derivatives trading or custody businesses, which continue to operate as usual.”

He added, “Genesis leadership and their board decided to hire financial and legal advisors and the firm is exploring all possible options amidst the fallout from the implosion of FTX.”

Last week, Genesis informed its clients that it was halting withdrawals because of liquidity issues. As of the third quarter, Genesis had $2.8 billion in active loans, according to a quarterly statement from the lender.

Killexams : Genesis seeks to shine with own auto showroom in Clarence

Genesis, a luxury auto brand, wants to stand out with its own local showroom.

Northtown Automotive is seeking approval from the Town of Clarence to build a Genesis showroom along Main Street, near some other luxury auto brands' homes.

Quarterly earnings results show ACV sold 5% fewer vehicles through its marketplace during the third quarter of 2022 as the dealers ACV works with are generally selling fewer cars.

Genesis is the luxury division of South Korean automaker Hyundai. Northtown since 2018 has sold Genesis vehicles – under the Genesis of Amherst banner – from its Hyundai location on Sheridan Drive in Amherst.

That was always intended be a temporary arrangement. Now, plans for a separate location are taking shape. It is part of a push by Genesis, through its dealers around the country, to increase the brand's visibility.

People are also reading…

"As the brand continues to add product and as it grows in terms of size, they want the dealerships to be singular in nature and to better reflect the brand image that they're trying to create: the more upscale luxury experience and footprint," said Lawrence Schreiber, co-owner of Northtown.

Maguire Auto Group is based in Ithaca and now has 15 dealerships in upstate New York.

Nationwide, Genesis vehicles are sold at 275 retailers. The first standalone Genesis dealership in the United States opened in March in Louisiana, and 107 others are in the planning stages, said Jarred Pellat, a Genesis spokesman. Northtown hopes to have its Genesis showroom in Clarence open in the second quarter of 2024.

Northtown was the first dealer in New York state to be awarded a Genesis franchise, and it operates the only one in the Buffalo Niagara region. According to the Niagara Frontier Automobile Dealers Association, 170 new Genesis vehicles were sold locally through October this year.

"The brand is meeting with a lot of consumer appeal," Schreiber said. "The customers that have them really seem to like them."

Northtown presented Genesis with potential locations for a standalone dealership. Genesis selected a site at 8143 Main St., near Transit Road, where Northtown was building a vehicle storage lot.

The dealer group has put the brakes on the storage lot project while it seeks town approval for the Genesis dealership instead. The Genesis showroom would join a cluster of high-end brands with showrooms in that part of the town, including Volvo, Porsche and Maserati.

Wegmans is gearing up for the expected electric vehicle boom. The supermarket chain is in the process of installing two electric vehicle charging stations at its Alberta Drive location.

The estimated project cost is not yet available, Schreiber said. Northtown is developing a showroom plan that will pass muster with both Genesis and town officials.

Schreiber anticipates it will take longer to complete a project such as this one than it did in years past, due to issues including availability of construction workers and materials.

"The unfortunate part is timing," he said. "With inflation being what it is, the cost of all these projects has escalated dramatically."

But he added that Genesis is on solid footing in the United States as the brand expands its vehicle lineup.

"Very quickly, we're going to be up to nine, 10 product offerings that exist within their showroom," he said.

Killexams : Genesis X Convertible concept: Dope or nope?

After the release of the Genesis Concept X Speedium, Genesis has unveiled a totally new vehicle, concisely named the Genesis X Convertible. Genesis was eager to observe the reaction of the present media, and is undoubtedly watching the public’s reaction through articles just like this one. With Genesis lending a listening ear, what do you think? Dope or nope?

Many don’t realize that Genesis, the flagship badge of the Korean Hyundai Group, is already selling two fully electric vehicles. The first is the G80 Electrified, an electric luxury sedan that recently expanded sales operations into a total of 12 states. The second received a similarly narrow release, the GV60 crossover. The G80 was made by adapting the current gas-powered G80, whereas the GV60 was built from the ground up to utilize Hyundai’s E-GMP platform.

With the backing of ambitious investments from Hyundai, Genesis will stop gas-powered vehicle development in 2025, and offer only electric models starting in 2030. With this in mind, we take a look at the new Genesis X Convertible.

Light strips

The design is unabashedly heavy on lighting strips. The front grille is replaced by the spanning head light bars. These lights continue well past the front fender, and continue again after being interrupted by the tire. The sides of these white lights were shown to change to an amber color during a signal. The rear of the vehicle bears a similar pattern, with the dual red light bars continuing onto the side of the vehicle.

The classic convertible silhouette is a fairly conservative choice for a concept vehicle. One of the few departures from the timeless shape is the rear end, which carries a small spoiler protruding out from the top of the trunk. The trunk edge itself is concave from the side, adding a bit of a butt to the back of the vehicle.

Executive vice president and chief creative officer Luc Donckerwolke

Genesis X Convertible designer

The X Convertible concept was designed in just a few months by auto veteran Luc Donckerwolke. With some internal feedback at Genesis, Donckerwolke began the project this last June. A card stock drawing (seen below) was handed out at the unveiling event, presumably a recreation of an original idea.

Concept of the concept

During a brief interview, Donckerwolke was short on details for this, or future convertibles from Genesis. When asked about the intended electric options Genesis could be exploring, Donckerwolke responded:

We don’t talk in details about this car yet, in terms of the performance and everything. We’re working on this, this will come with time. At the moment we’re showing the search for an icon for the brand, and this is one of the possibilities.

Genesis X Convertible interior

Electrek’s Take

I like this design. Assuming it’s an EV, I hope Genesis pursues it all the way to production. The EV space is getting representation in more and more segments, and I think it’s about time the convertible market got some “coverage” from a larger model. My dream EV is a big ghetto-blasting DJ Kool Herc convertible with speakers so big they blow a hole in society.

DJ Kool Herc nourishing a new culture in real time

Considering the brand only has a few years of ICE development left, someone is going to be left holding the hot potato. Genesis has three concepts up for adulation right now; the Coupe, the Speedium, and this Convertible. Which of these will be stuck with a gas engine, and which will continue uninterrupted into the modern age?

Sound off in the comments section and let Genesis know what you think.

Killexams : Genesis reveals X Convertible concept in the L.A. sun

Genesis completed its X concept trilogy with the introduction of the X Convertible concept Tuesday in L.A., taking advantage of the gorgeous Southern California weather to show off the droptop version of the grand tourer we saw in 2021 and the "Speedium" shooting brake that was teased earlier this year. What better venue for the introduction of a futuristic convertible concept than Los Angeles? Even better, Genesis took to the open air to introduce its new drop-top, eschewing the stuffy show floor in favor of a beautiful beachside sunset.

"Genesis started life by producing sedans mainly targeting business users. While creating a new, differentiated design DNA, we gradually increased the emotional appeal by applying this DNA to the SUV typology. Now, electric powertrains have given us the perfect scenario in which to enjoy nature, and propelled the brand to create vehicles with even greater emotional resonance," said brand Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke.

All of elements that made the X Speedium Coupe so captivating are repeated here — with the bonus drama of a missing roof, of course. In fact, with the top down, the X Convertible might even be more of a looker than the hardtop. The coupe's wrap-around interior treatment carries over too. Though it loses a bit of its intimacy with the open-top treatment, it still looks pretty darned inviting. There's even a steering wheel. How about that?

As for whether Genesis will build any of these concepts, well, that remains to be seen. The company has yet to deliver us an idea of what might power these low-slung styling exercises, but the smart money is on a battery-electric powertrain lifted from the corporate portfolio which, as of 2023, will include the 576 horsepower Kia EV6 GT. We're certain it would be quick and likely worth the wait, but will it be worth the weight? The all-electric performance car space remains pretty small for a reason. We'd love to see that change.

The lending arm of the cryptocurrency brokerage Genesis is suspending redemptions and new loan originations as it deals with a wave of withdrawals following the fall of FTX. In a statement on Twitter, Genesis says the “abnormal withdrawal requests” have exceeded its “current liquidity.”

FTX, which was once the third biggest cryptocurrency exchange by volume, filed for bankruptcy last week, causing panic to ripple through the crypto community as investors pull their funds from other exchanges in fear that they might suffer the same fate. This influx of withdrawals hit Genesis as well, which revealed last week that it has $175 million locked up in FTX.

Digital Currency Group (DCG) — the venture capital group that owns Genesis, Grayscale Investments, and the crypto news outlet CoinDesk — provided the brokerage with a $140 million equity infusion to help it weather the collapse. DCG also swooped in to help Genesis following the demise of the crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC) in July and assumed liabilities for the $1.2 billion claim Genesis filed against the now-bankrupt firm. DCG says Genesis’ move to suspend withdrawals “has no impact on the business operations of DCG and our other wholly owned subsidiaries.”

In its latest earnings reports, Genesis reported an 80 percent decline in active loans when compared to the previous quarter, slumping from $4.9 billion in the second quarter to just $2.8 billion in the third. Genesis also laid off 20 percent of its workers after 3AC’s collapse and replaced former CEO Michael Moro with COO Derar Islim. Going forward, Genesis says it’s going to announce a “plan for the lending business” next week and that its move won’t affect its trading or custody business.

The news is already starting to reverberate throughout the cryptocurrency industry, though. Gemini, the crypto exchange owned by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, announced that it’s pausing withdrawals on its Earn program, which uses Genesis as its lending partner. Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, is also affected, as it partners with Genesis to extend USDC-based credit to businesses and merchants. As pointed out by Blockworks, Circle’s annual percentage yield (APY) decreased to zero, when it sat at 0.25 percent on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, other crypto platforms, such as Binance and Crypto.com, are looking to quell fears by publishing proof of reserves amidst a push to become more transparent with investors. While Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek says the exchange “has zero exposure to Genesis and Gemini Earn,” Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao explains the company “does not rely on Genesis or any other 3rd-party for our Earn products.”

Update November 16th, 3:33PM ET: Updated to add that Circle is also affected by Genesis’ decision to suspend withdrawals.
