With so much at stake, the bar exam may seem formidable. But as with any test, following a few simple principles can see you through. Develop a study schedule — and stick to it. Understand what the exam is testing for and use your resources.

Follow these quick tips to study (better) for the bar exam.

What Is the Bar Exam?  

The bar exam assesses your knowledge of legal principles, reasoning, and many other skills and competencies crucial to working as a lawyer. By passing the bar exam, you gain membership to the state bar and licensure to practice law in your state. 

You must be admitted to the bar in every state where you want to practice. So, if you live in New York, you need to pass the bar exam as defined by the New York State Bar Association. 

Each state has its own standards and requirements for the bar exam. Increasingly, states are adopting the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), which includes three unique tests you’ll take over two days: 

  • Multistate Bar Examination (MBE): You’ll respond to 200 multiple-choice questions over a six-hour test period. The questions assess your legal reasoning and ability to identify fact patterns, among other competencies.

  • Multistate Essay Examination (MEE): By responding to six, 30-minute essay questions about real-life legal issues, you’ll convey your writing communication skills.

  • Multistate Performance Test (MPT): This is not a knowledge test. Instead, you’ll apply your skills as a new lawyer through this test based on real-life scenarios. 

How to Study for the Bar Exam 

We get it: It’s a lot of testing. 

But you finished law school. That’s a major feat. So, you already likely have all the habits and skills to study and pass one more test. Review these tips to stay organized with your test prep.  

Create a Study Schedule 

As with any test, establishing a routine to study and practice will pay off. Incorporate your bar review course into your calendar, and let your friends and family know that you’ll need some space for study hours. Build in committed study days and times — as well as time off to decompress and let your practice sink in.

Top test takers often recommend studying strategically. That means identifying your weak areas and intentionally practicing to build those skills.  

Plus, keep yourself — and your brain — in good functioning condition as you study. You might feel tempted to cram all night in the weeks leading up to the exam but get enough rest. Study in manageable sessions. Eat well, too, so you’re prepared to think clearly. 

As you study, keep in mind that every state jurisdiction has its own requirements for the bar exam. Be sure to review those specifics before you dive into the material; see the state-by-state breakdown from the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE)

Understand the Test’s Core Competencies 

Break down the test and understand what it’s asking of you. Knowing what to expect from the test and the core competencies it’s testing for can increase your confidence. 

For the MBE, you’ll have 25 questions from each of these seven subject areas: Criminal Law and Procedure, Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Torts, Evidence, Real Property, and Contracts. 

Get Your Study Materials

You don’t have to try to pass the bar exam in a vacuum. And you probably shouldn’t. 

It’s best to understand your resources — free or paid. The American Bar Association (ABA) says that your chances of passing the exam are likely higher by enrolling in a commercial bar review course.

Explains David Summerland, CEO of SFN: "Design engineers and purchasers want to pay less for their ICs and have them now rather than on long leadtimes. But semiconductor makers have limited capacity. By installing our ITM180 process node infrastructure, semiconductor foundries could easily offer their customers savings of 50% on the price of a device. And halve leadtime. If the original device maker is not ready to shift to Bizen, then SFN can replicate the CMOS chip in question and produce an equivalent Bizen device that offers pin-for-pin functionality and performance on the WaferTrain lines.

Bizen applies quantum mechanics to any wafer process technology. The Bizen wafer process is used to build Zpolar Transistors with Zpolar® Tunnel Logic (ZTL). Bizen ZTL chips require fewer processing layers than CMOS, enabling complex devices to be manufactured in large-geometry fabs around the world. So, a 180nm fab using ITM35 Bizen can deliver ZTL chips with the equivalent performance of 35nm CMOS using ten times fewer process steps than an real 35nm CMOS process. "This decrease in complexity is enough to allow IC makers to slash prices and leadtimes for customers", adds Summerland.

Although a new technology, the Bizen process can run on standard silicon process technologies using standard CMOS processing equipment. SFN has produced ‘gold standard’ test wafers, which have been characterized, put into a JMP data book and used to produce SPICE models which run in the Cadence design environment, and matches the results from the Synopsis wafer process flow. Last month, SFN released four ITM process nodes: ITM180 which can deliver ZTL chips with the performance of 180nm CMOS using one micron equipment; ITM35 which enables 35nm CMOS-equivalent ICs to be made in 180nm process node fabs; ITM5 which enables 5nm CMOS performance from 28nm steppers, and ITMSubnm which means that current state-of-the-art 3nm fabs will be able to deliver incredible sub-nm, Angstrom-level capabilities.

The future of network security has a new shiny architecture to meet organizational needs with Secure Access Service Edge (SASE). Still, most network administrators are either not ready or able to decommission their existing on-premisessecurity solutions. Organizations are much more likely to need to support hybrid environments that require the support of on-premises capabilities and service-based offerings for the foreseeable future. 

First, SASE is not a product but an architecture. You cannot just buy one off the shelf and plug it in. The fact is that most network decision-makers need to determine how to best leverage SASE to support the business. It is critical to engage with the ops team, as they are the most crucial stakeholder in this process, to ensure the network experience continuity is preserved. After all, this team must deploy and maintain both existing and new technologies to deliver business continuity to users and customers alike.

The benefits of cloud-based security delivered as-a-service are particularly dramatic for the experience of ops teams. These include:

  • Unbroken visibility: With SASE, ops teams must have complete visibility, policy configuration, administration, and collective threat intelligence all in one place. Managing security from multiple dashboards in order to get a comprehensive view of the network is now a thing of the past. With SASE and Secure Service Edge (SSE), users can connect directly to a network security and control point (regional Point of Presence, or PoP) and eliminate the hairpins back through the data center (which were previously required just to continue to the web). Ensuring success on SASE journey

As your organization looks at transitioning to a SASE architecture, here are a few considerations that will help map the journey, all while ensuring business continuity with existing controls and processes:

  • Visibility and control: With a SASE architecture, it is essential to ensure that your ops team can see everything happening across your network. That requires unbroken visibility between existing controls and the SASE service-based capabilities that provide continuity that supports business and security operations without undue burden for the ops team. After all, you can’t protect what you can’t see. Visibility is critical for effective and accurate threat identification and, when you couple it with an intuitive mitigation approach, is reasonably straightforward.
  • Management, management, management: Too many solutions require human intervention or integrations between disparate systems. If you have a different policy structure and syntax for the service vs. the on-premises data center, that will cause issues. It is unwise to hope the analyst team can work at digital speeds and interpret where a threat has traversed the two format environments. After all, “hope is not a strategy.”
  • Plan for tomorrow but remain pragmatic about adoption: It’s unlikely that most organizations will be able to commit all security controls to a cloud-delivered service. This means accommodations and approaches must address on-premises (and in DC) apps, potential IoT security controls, and any other requirements without requiring ops team heroics to bring them together. Ensure the policy control and management approach, the tools and visibility, and ultimately the complete environment is viewable and manageable from a single management UI. This journey will take years for most, but it’s well worth it.

SASE answers the question we’ve asked for decades: “How can we Improve security overall without introducing more operational complexity?” However, for each organization, the approach will be unique, and the operations team will lead the expedition that helps the organization forge its own path.

Networking teams have been challenged to provide hybrid workers with secure access to cloud-based applications, and they’re looking for greater automation and additional visibility tools to help them manage today’s diverse enterprise workloads.

That’s among the key findings of Cisco’s new Global Hybrid Cloud Trends report, which surveyed 2,500 IT decision makers in 13 countries to discern the trends and priorities of organizations that are managing workloads across multiple private, public cloud and edge computing environments. Cisco said its report is aimed at looking at how these multicloud environments impact network operations.

“We found that as businesses adapt to the changing environment, IT priorities are shifting,” wrote Thomas Scheibe, vice president of product management for Cisco cloud networking, in the report.

“For the first time, agility and business performance have overtaken cost and network management as the key concerns for IT teams, with 42% of respondents citing a more agile development environment as their top reason for moving to multiple clouds,” Scheibe stated.

At the same time, organizations are grappling with unprecedented levels of complexity and uncertainty, which is fueling a search for simplicity and security, according to Scheibe.  

As endpoints and applications become more dispersed and distributed, network complexity multiplies. While adoption of public cloud is growing, 50% of workloads are still deployed on premise. As a result, most environments will continue to be a mix of public cloud, hosted, private cloud, edge, and on-premises environments, Cisco stated.

If you’re someone who wears AirPods Pro frequently, there’s now a new reason for leaving them on when you’re not listening to music. A latest scientific study found that the AirPods Pro can be just as effective as some prescription hearing aids in helping those with mild-to-moderate hearing loss.

In a study published by iScience and reported by The Wall Street Journal, researchers found that while the 21 adults who participated in the study had a preference for a $10,000 hearing aid, the AirPods Pro used with Live Listen turned on performed well against the other prescription hearing aids tested. Live Listen is a feature that uses the microphones on the iPhone to feed audio to the AirPods Pro. The study also involved sound and clarity tests and the AirPods Pro met established standards per the ANSI/CTA-2051 criteria for personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) in four of the five tests.

However, these results only apply to the AirPods Pro–the same study included the more affordable 2nd-generation AirPods, and the researchers found that the “outcome aided with AirPods 2 was poorer than hearing aids,” and that the AirPods met only two of the five ANSI/CTA-2051 criteria for PSAPs. (The 3rd-generation AirPods were released a year ago and were not used in the study. It’s likely that they were not available at the time.)

The study involved lab audio testing and clinical assessments with 21 participants.

The researchers admit that the study is limited by its small demo size, but they do believe that the results show “statistical power [that] was satisfactory.” The study also mentions how prescription hearing aids are expensive, making them out of reach for a lot of people. AirPods Pro could be used as a “highly feasible and more affordable option.”

As someone who’s had some hearing loss, which started after attending an Anthrax/Public Enemy concert in 1991 and worsened over the years, I’ve actually used my AirPods Pro and Live Listen in a couple of situations and can personally attest to their ability to Improve hearing in a conversation. I don’t use them as often as I could because, as the study points out, the person I’m talking to may think it’s rude that I’m still wearing my AirPods Pro. But now that this study proves their value, it’ll make me feel more comfortable leaving them on.

The study points out that there are limitations to using the AirPods Pro as a hearing aid, including battery life and stronger microphones to pick up environmental sounds. However, as Yen-Fu Cheng at Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan, who co-wrote the study, says, the AirPods Pro are “a good way for people to experience what the world would be like if they could get some help, an upgrade for their hearing.”

Although a new technology, the Bizen process can run on standard silicon process technologies using standard CMOS processing equipment. SFN has produced ‘gold standard' test wafers, which have been characterized, put into a JMP data book and used to produce SPICE models which run in the Cadence design environment, and matches the results from the Synopsis wafer process flow. Last month, SFN released four ITM process nodes: ITM180 which can deliver ZTL chips with the performance of 180nm CMOS using one micron equipment; ITM35 which enables 35nm CMOS-equivalent ICs to be made in 180nm process node fabs; ITM5 which enables 5nm CMOS performance from 28nm steppers, and ITMSubnm which means that current state-of-the-art 3nm fabs will be able to deliver incredible sub-nm, Angstrom-level capabilities.

"We will release ZTL demonstrators in Q1 2023", concludes Summerland. "These will have real, packaged chips so people can see the final proof of our technology".
