Killexams : Vehicle Certification Agency to lose powers after Brexit

The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) will automatically lose its ability to provide European-wide type approval to new cars when the UK leaves the European Union.

The VCA is operated by the Department for Transport (DfT), and its type approval process ensures all mass-market new cars – and existing models receiving major updates – meet mandatory technical and safety requirements before going on sale.

Brexit could force Japanese carmakers out of the UK

Under current rules, a vehicle approved by the VCA is automatically granted type approval across the EU. When the UK leaves the EU, that cross-country authority will be lost.

A recent document released by the European Commission states that after the UK has left the EU, “the United Kingdom approval authority [VCA] will cease to be an EU type-approval authority."

The document continues: “As a result, it will not be possible as from the withdrawal date for a manufacturer to place on the Union market motor vehicles accompanied by a certificate of conformity referring to a type-approval granted by the United Kingdom approval authority.”

Stripping the VCA of its EU-wide powers would have significant implications for carmakers with UK operations, a number of whom pay between £350,000 and £500,000 to the VCA each time a new model is submitted for type approval. The Financial Times reports a number of major manufacturers have either cancelled future arrangements with the VCA, are in talks with another country’s certification authority, or are considering leaving the VCA.

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) previously warned carmakers could simply drop some models from the UK market due to post-Brexit type approval issues, while Aston Martin voiced similar concerns towards the end of last year.

The European Commission’s report allows for the possibility of a “transitional arrangement” relating to vehicle type approval, which could allow the VCA’s EU-wide authority to remain post-Brexit. However, it warns of “considerable uncertainties” and “legal repercussions” related to type approval.

A DfT spokesperson said: “The Vehicle Certification Agency is internationally recognised and respected, and we are confident it will remain one of the world’s leading type approval authorities after we leave the European Union."

Now read about the Brexit impact assessments which suggest the UK car industry could face a 13 per cent rise in costs after the UK leaves the EU...

Killexams : Four Knowles Fellows Achieve National Board Certification

Three Additional Fellows Maintained Certification

MOORESTOWN, N.J., Feb. 1, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The Knowles Teacher Initiative today announced that four of its Fellows achieved National Board Certification, the highest certification available for K–12 educators, in the 2021–2022 cycle.

National Board Certification was designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide. Using the National Board Standards and the Five Core Propositions as a foundation, National Board Certification identifies teachers who meet those standards through completion of a performance-based, peer-reviewed series of assessment components. Specifically, candidates are required to complete four components. They must demonstrate content knowledge on a computer-based assessment. Additionally, they must submit classroom-based portfolios containing evidence of differentiation in instruction, their teaching practice and learning environment, and their ability to act as an effective and reflective practitioner.

The following Knowles Fellows achieved National Board Certification:

Additionally, three Knowles Fellows maintained their certification:

Jeff Rozelle, Knowles President and CEO, stated, "Achieving National Board Certification is no small feat. I'm thrilled to extend congratulations to all of the teachers who met the high standards established by NBPTS to achieve or maintain certification. Their commitment to student learning and the teaching profession is truly commendable."

The Knowles Teaching Fellows Program is a five-year program that provides early-career, high school mathematics and science teachers with access to invaluable resources that help them transform into great teachers who make a difference in the lives of students in their classroom, their school and beyond. After completing the five-year program, Teaching Fellows become Senior Fellows who are able to participate in Knowles leadership opportunities throughout the duration of their career. As part of the wide array of benefits available to Fellows, Knowles awards grant funds to pay for expenses related to National Board Certification.

Nationally, more than 130,000 teachers have achieved National Board Certification, including 52 Knowles Fellows.

About the Knowles Teacher Initiative

The Knowles Teacher Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit formerly known as the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF), was established by Janet H. and C. Harry Knowles in 1999 to increase the number of high-quality high school science and mathematics teachers in the United States. Through the Teaching Fellows Program, Senior Fellows Program and the Knowles Academy, the Knowles Teacher Initiative seeks to support a national network of mathematics and science teachers who are collaborative, innovative leaders improving education for all students in the United States. Killexams : New year, new law: Certification now required to operate off-road vehicles in Utah

As of Jan. 1, people who drive side-by-sides, ATVs and other OHV vehicles need a new certification before getting behind the wheel or handlebars.

Those in the off-roading community agree the new law is needed in Utah.

“We’ve been part of a restructuring process for years,” said, Bud Bruening, president of UTV Utah.

Bruening leads the largest off-road group in the United States.

“UTV Utah, we are a non profit, we are a 501c4,” Bruening said. “We advocate for keeping trails and access open.”

With 45,000 members and growing, he and others in the OHV community agree that something needed to be done to protect the trails and safety of all.

Chase Pili, OHV Program Manager for Division of Outdoor Recreation, said trail use has grown exponentially.

“We’re seeing increased use on these trails, with a lot of people who don’t know the nuts and bolts and awareness for all these rules,” Pili said.

Here are the details of the course:

  • Anyone over 18 needs to take this course
  • The course takes less than 30 minutes to complete
  • Certification will remain valid for a user’s lifetime
  • The course has 26 questions, accompanied by educational videos, that cover basic safety advice, guidance on legal requirements for operating an OHV on public lands, packing out waste, and how to be a good steward and sustainable user of trails and the environment.

Completion of the course is required for those who operate:

  • Type 1 ATVs (three or more wheels with handlebars and designed to be straddled)
  • Type II UTVs (side-by-sides)
  • Type III OHVs (modified jeeps or “rock crawlers”)
  • Off-highway motorcycles.

Vehicles that are exempt are:

  • Snowmobiles
  • Participants of guided tours
  • Implements of husbandry
  • Sanctioned OHV events
  • 4x4s registered as normal road vehicles with full-sized license plates.

“A lot of the people causing the problems, they just don’t know any better,” Bruening said.

KUTV also spoke with Brinton Passey who manages Lofty Peaks in Heber City.

“Out of this location, this is our rental, this is what we do,” Passey said.

Passey sees a lot of first-time OHV drivers

“The more education we can supply the general public, the better experience we can have,” he said.

He said some accidents may not be preventable, but this is a tool to get everyone on the same page.

“This bill was actually created by us," Bruening said. “Users like myself that feel like we need to do more to make sure people are staying on trails and being smart.”

The requirements for youth have have not changed since the new year: anyone younger than 18 is required to be certified in OHV education before operating an off-highway vehicle.

The final FLSP lantern-lit walk of 2023 is from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and includes a Great Start Collaborative Book Walk. Barnhardt has more than six years of experience in community education and training. She is available to come onsite to any business and lead training sessions for employees. Killexams : New Jersey board approves 'Ejaculate Responsibly' book after teacher was 'disturbed' it was not included

A New Jersey school board approved a book about abortion after a teacher spoke up about the book not being included on meeting agenda items.

The teacher expressed being "disturbed" at a school board meeting Thursday when she tried to convince Berkeley Heights Township School District Board members to approve the donation of a book called "Ejaculate Responsibly" by Gabrielle Stanley Blair.

"I'm frankly dismayed and disturbed that the Board of Education has not accepted a donation of books entitled ‘Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion,’" Sharon Leahy, a social studies teacher at Governor Livingston High School said.

The book was donated to Governor Livingston High School for the school’s "student-driven" Literary Lunch program. Approval of accepting the donation is custom for the school board. The approval process was delayed and was not included in the meeting’s agenda.

Leahy claimed that the donation was submitted in time for inclusion on the agenda for that night. The Literary Lunch program is "optional" and requires parent permission, Leahy said.

She went on to say, "We're extremely disappointed that the Berkeley Heights Ed Foundation chose not to support literary lunch. Over the years, the selected books for Lit Lunch included discussions on school shootings, immigration, Islamophobia, race, the Holocaust, and most recently, child soldiers and ethical choices compromised by war. This Lit Lunch is voluntary and at no cost to the district. Therefore, the issue must be content."

Leahy went on to praise the book.

"I do not understand why you, the Board of Ed, or the BHEF, for that matter, would prevent students from participating in an academic discussion about women's health during women's history month. The discussion of the heart of the book does not focus on religious or sexual morality. It reframes the arguments around the abortion debate, which is a monumental women's issue and societal battle [which has lasted] over fifty years. The last election indicates the relevancy of this topic," she said.

Leahy was not the only one who voiced support for the book. Payton Buckley, a junior at Governor Livingston High School, said that the Literacy Lunch program was meant to be an opportunity for students to have a safe place for discussion of "hard topics." The student added that the book is a "relatively nonpartisan approach towards issues such as abortion, and continuously cites relevant and reliable data."

A resident and sponsor of the Literacy Lunch program also addressed the board, expressing disappointment that the book was not on the agenda for that night.

A motion to approve the book donation was proposed, despite a board member sharing concerns about the board's procedures not being followed. The donation was approved by the school board, seven to one, with board member Robert Cianciulli voting now. He said he had not read the book.

Ejaculate Responsibly, is a book that offers a "provocative reframing of the abortion issue in post-Roe America," a description of the book on Amazon states. It contains a series of "28 brief arguments," in which the author makes the case for redirecting the abortion debate away from "controlling and legislating women's bodies" to highlight "men's lack of accountability in preventing unwanted pregnancies."

Back in October last year, the book's author Blair did an interview with NPR, saying that she indeed wanted to "shift" the conversation about abortion to men not being held accountable for causing unwanted pregnancies.

A New Jersey school teacher is "disturbed" that a book that encourages vasectomies is not included in school.

"It's a bit of a prescription, and it's also an argument... It's called that because I'm trying to shift the conversation about abortion away from controlling women's bodies and legislating women's bodies, and instead focus on the fact that men are not held accountable for causing unwanted pregnancies," Blair told NPR.

Blair also said that it was "absolutely bonkers, just hearing man after man grandstanding about abortion."

"It's so clear to me they don't understand the issue," Blair told NPR. "They don't understand that real people are going to be affected by this, that it affects both wanted and unwanted pregnancies like that. They just don't really understand what's happening here, and they're just using this as a political tool."

Blair also it would be "huge" if vasectomies were free and easily accessible.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Berkeley Heights Public Schools board for comment, but they did not immediately respond.

Berkeley Heights Public Schools, located in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, presides over 6 schools and has approximately 2,499 students in grades K-12.
