Amazon's human workforce is getting to know their robot co-workers as the company begins testing Agility Robotics' Digit in its US warehouses.
Digit is a two-legged robot that can walk, lift boxes, and won't come with many of the costs associated with human employees, given it costs only $10 to $12 an hour to operate, according to Agility Robotics CEO Damion Shelton. But is Amazon making a mistake by investing in humanoid robots for warehouse tasks?

Boston Dynamics CTO Aaron Saunders told TechCrunch in an interview published Saturday that while humanoid robots have "great potential" in closing the "technology gap" and will be crucial in the field of "general-purpose robotics," the human shape isn't always the ideal form for specific jobs ‚ÄĒ including moving boxes.
"Humanoids aren't necessarily the best form factor for all tasks ‚Ä¶ Just because humans can move boxes doesn't mean we're the best form factor to complete that task," Saunders said, adding that Boston Dynamics' robot Stretch ‚ÄĒ an automated mobile robot that has a crane-like arm and moves on wheels ‚ÄĒ isn't a humanoid and, as a result, can "move boxes more efficiently and effectively than a human."
One of Agility Robotics' selling points for Digit is the robot's ability to adapt to existing warehouse infrastructure and floorplans that weren't necessarily designed for robots and automation. According to the company, it can also lift objects of various sizes and weights.
"Imagine robots working in spaces built for people alongside people," a narrator says in an ad for Digit, describing the five-foot, nine-inch, robot with smiling eyes as "approachable."
"The mobility of Digits' upright bipedal design allows it to integrate flawlessly into existing infrastructure. No building permits, power drops, or floorplan changes required," the ad says.
But Boston Dynamics also claims to have achieved something similar with Stretch, a robot with a crane-like arm that moves on wheels.
Mike Fair, Boston Dynamics' lead product manager of warehouse robotics, said in a presentation that some of the benefits of Stretch are its mobility and flexibility.
"It is a mobile robot, so it can go anywhere work needs to be done, and it's flexible. It can drop into existing facilities or existing infrastructure and get to work within just a matter of days," Fair said.
Boston Dynamics also advertises that Stretch has the potential to be a "multipurpose robot" capable of performing different tasks throughout the warehouse, including depalletizing items and loading trucks.
A Boston Dynamics spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent during the weekend.
However, Agility Robotics' vision for its humanoid robot is arguably more ambitious.
While Digit's current application focuses only on moving packages, the company says on its website that the robot's next application will be unloading trailers and, down the road, last-mile delivery service to people's homes. In comparison, Stretch's current and future applications appear to be limited to warehouse spaces.
Ford became one of Digit's first customers in 2020, announcing plans to use the bipedal robot for last-mile package deliveries as car companies brace for a future where self-driving cars can make home deliveries.
Spokespersons for Amazon and Agility Robotics did not respond to a request for comment sent during the weekend.

Amazon announced this week it‚Äôs testing out a new grocery subscription for Prime members in a few U.S. cities. For $9.99 a month ‚ÄĒ on top of a Prime membership ‚ÄĒ shoppers in Denver, Colorado, Sacramento, California and Columbus, Ohio can get unlimited free grocery delivery from either Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods, if they spend more than $35 on the order.
It‚Äôs the latest in a series of changes the company has made to its fresh food business model, as it tries to take a bigger bite out of the $800 billion dollar-a-year grocery market.
Amazon has been in the grocery game since 2007.¬† But it really stepped up efforts in recent years, buying Whole Foods in 2017 and opening Amazon Fresh stores in 2020.
‚ÄúThey want to be ‚ÄėThe Everything Store,‚Äô and you can‚Äôt be ‚ÄėThe Everything Store‚Äô if you don‚Äôt sell the goods that people buy most frequently; someplace that you‚Äôll turn, maybe every single day,‚ÄĚ said Jason Del Rey, the author of ‚ÄúWinner Sells All: Amazon, Walmart and the Battle for our Wallets.‚ÄĚ
He says on the grocery front, Amazon does not have the upper hand.
‚ÄúIt kind of sounds like a hot mess,‚ÄĚ he said.
And not the delicious kind. The company has opened and then closed brick and mortar stores, switched around the order size that qualifies for free deliveries, and offered groceries for a fee to non-Prime members.
‚ÄúAnd yet here we are at the end of 2023 and they‚Äôre really still searching,‚ÄĚ Del Rey said.
Amazon‚Äôs share of the total grocery market is in the single digits. But buying food online did get supercharged by the pandemic, says Jake Dollarhide, CEO of Longbow Asset Management, who‚Äôs still in the habit.
‚ÄúI placed an order to have some blackberries and blueberries and meat delivered here to our home, and it is a game changer,‚ÄĚ he said.
But Dollarhide ordered from Walmart, which leads both online orders and the entire grocery market in the U.S.
‚ÄúI mean, Walmart is going to own the value proposition every day of the week, twice on Sunday,‚ÄĚ he said.
While Amazon, like Walmart, has the benefit of scale, it doesn‚Äôt at the moment have thousands of local stores. And it‚Äôs hard to make it in the grocery business on deliveries alone, said Phil Lempert, editor of Supermarket Guru. Even Instacart relies on advertising in its app to stay afloat.
‚ÄúConsumers, for the most part, are not willing to pay the price for delivery,‚ÄĚ he said. ‚ÄúNobody makes money on it. It‚Äôs more of a convenience, it‚Äôs more of a way to build a relationship with people.‚ÄĚ
He says typical grocery margins are just 1.5%, so it takes a very successful grocery business to maintain a semi-successful delivery business.

Amazon is piloting a new grocery subscription for members of its Prime program, the company said Thursday, marking the latest recalibration of its online supermarket offerings.
Members of the company's Prime program will have the option to pay $9.99 per month to get unlimited grocery delivery from Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh on orders more than $35. They'll also have access to 30-minute pickup on orders of any size. To start, the service is rolling out in Denver, Colorado; Sacramento, California; and Columbus, Ohio.
"We're always experimenting with features to make shopping easier, faster, and more affordable, and we look forward to hearing how members who take advantage of this offer respond," Tony Hoggett, who leads Amazon's physical stores business, said in a statement.
Amazon is betting Prime members will want to pay an additional monthly charge for fresh food to be dropped at their doorstep without pesky delivery fees. A Prime subscription costs $139 per year, or $14.99 per month, in the U.S., and the membership's perks include free, speedy shipping and access to video streaming. With the add-on grocery subscription, the offering could drive bigger, and more frequent, food orders among Prime members.
Amazon has tweaked its fee-free delivery threshold for Fresh and Whole Foods orders in recent years amid mounting costs. In October, the company lowered its threshold for free Fresh grocery delivery to orders over $100, after setting the minimum at $150 months earlier. In 2021, the company introduced a $10 service fee for Whole Foods delivery orders to Prime members.
Prior to the fee changes earlier this year, the company offered free Amazon Fresh grocery delivery on orders above $35 at no extra cost for Prime members.
Amazon has been determined to cement itself as a grocery destination for shoppers. Since acquiring Whole Foods Market in 2017 for $13.7 billion, it has launched its own chain of Fresh supermarkets, and it's taken steps more recently to unify its online and brick-and-mortar grocery operations, while appealing to a broader swath of consumers. Last month, the company opened Fresh grocery delivery to people without Prime anywhere in the U.S., after testing the feature in a handful of cities.
