Android users may finally get an easy way to get iMessage in 2023 thanks to a new app called Sunbird.

Launching in closed beta, for now, Sunbird claims it's the first and only fully-featured iMessage for Android app. It doesn't require a relay server, Apple device, or desktop software, only an Apple ID.

It supports encryption, full-quality photos and videos, iMessage group chats, reactions, tapbacks, live-typing indicators, and read receipts.

Apple's iMessage service is the main focus for now. In a conference with AppleInsider, the Sunbird team called it it the "low-hanging fruit" as they noticed how many Google searches exist for terms such as "iMessage on Android."

However, Sunbird aims to be a unified messaging app for many more services, including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, SMS/MMS, and others that the company will add in the future.

"We've solved 14 years of communications challenges associated with Android messaging," states Danny Mizrahi, CEO, and Founder of Sunbird Messaging. "By inventing new technology that gives Android users iMessage on Android, one can enjoy the most popular functions and features uniting the top messaging apps that people use every day. One inbox for all your messages."

The product roadmap for other messaging services includes Telegram, RCS, Instagram Direct Messaging, Slack, Signal, and Discord.

Sunbird is quick to mention that its servers never store personal data or third-party login information. All message types are end-to-end encrypted except for SMS, which doesn't support such security.

The company also plans to build a web app for Sunbird, but it doesn't have plans for an iOS app, at least currently.

Sunbird will roll out invitations in phases to join the closed beta user group beginning in late 2022. So far, the company hopes for a public release in mid-2023.

The app will be free for the foreseeable future.

AppleInsider attended a presentation of the announcement. Sunbird showed a few demonstrations of the app, such as adding an integration with iMessage.

There wasn't a clear indication if it was a live demo or not. The team did mention that their app is still in the early alpha stage.

They did answer a couple of questions surrounding privacy and security. Sunbird mentioned this subject more than once, saying that they don't store any user data or messages.

Services that it plans to include, such as iMessage and Signal, rely on end-to-end encryption. We asked if the company has done an independent security audit, and the team said that was on the roadmap for the future.

If the app does work as intended, it could be a major breakthrough for Android users. Instead of relying on non-encrypted methods such as Facebook Messenger or SMS, Sunbird may be able to provide a more private way to communicate with Apple friends and family.

There’s a lot to choose from when you’re looking for the best smartphones for photographers, and one of the first things you might want to consider is to narrow your search down to iPhone vs Android.

Android is the operating system which is used by most manufacturers other than Apple. So that means smartphones by Samsung, Google, OnePlus, Sony, Huawei, Honor, Xiaomi, Oppo and so on will all use the Android operating system. Apple is the only manufacturer using iOS, for its iPhone smartphones.

All of the above manufacturers claim that their smartphones are great for photographers, but how do the specs stack up between the two systems, and which should the discerning photographer be keen to pick up? Let’s try and find out…

Most of the flagship Android models, such as the Samsung S22 Ultra, Pixel 7 Pro and the OnePlus 10 Pro feature either a three or four lens setup.

Cheaper models tend to feature a double-lens set up, which is a good idea if you’ve got a more limited budget.

The latest iPhone Pro models have a triple-lens setup, with the cheaper standard iPhone models having a double lens setup – again a good idea for those on a budget.

While overall, iPhone and Androids are reasonably well-matched when it comes to the number of cameras/lenses each include, as a rule, it tends to be Android where you’ll see the most innovation or technical advancement.

For example, with the Samsung S22 Ultra you get four lenses, including a 10x zoom lens. With the Sony Xperia 1 II, you get an optical zoom in one lens – so it can actually zoom from one focal length to another, a unique property for smartphones.

Until relatively recently, this would have been a clear-cut win for the Android contingent. The exact release of the iPhone 14 Pro has finally seen Apple move past the 12-megapixel barrier for its smartphone sensors.

Android, meanwhile, has had a number of smartphones with very high-resolution sensors for quite some time. For example, the Samsung S22 Ultra has a 108MP sensor, while the Google Pixel 7 Pro has a 50MP sensor. We’ve seen development announcements of Android phones that go beyond 200 megapixels, too.

Although having a super-high resolution isn’t necessarily that important for everyday photography, it gives certain advantages. For example, pixel binning – whereby pixels are combined together – can be helpful in low light. It’s also useful for cropping – or digital zoom – without losing resolution.

It seems likely that Apple will use higher resolution sensors now that it’s debuted one, but for now, the wider Android market certainly has more variety if that’s what you crave.

You can find both Android and iOS smartphones which offer raw shooting capability. Apple calls this “ProRAW” and you’ll find a variety of terms across the Android sector.

All of them shoot in the universal “DNG” format, meaning that the raw files can be read by a wide variety of devices, without the need for specific or updated software.

iPhone vs Android: Video

Video is a key specification highlight across both iOS and Android models. For some people it will be a key factor in any buying decision, while for others it will be largely irrelevant.

If you opt for iOS and go for one of the latest iPhone “Pro” models, you’ll get 4K video, slow motion options, plus Apple’s “ProRes” video recording, which is useful for advanced users. It’s worth noting that you’ll need at least a 256GB iPhone in order to take full advantage of it.

Meanwhile, most Android models offer 4K video recording as standard. If you want the ability to shoot at the higher 8K resolution, some models also support that – such as the Samsung S22 Ultra. Lots of Android models have some kind of “pro” movie recording options, too.

If video recording is a top priority for you, it pays to delve deep into the specific model you’re looking at to make sure it has everything you need.

Generally speaking, Android smartphones have better – or more expansive – native camera apps. The iPhone native camera app is fairly straightforward and basic, giving you little or no control over certain settings. If having access to some kind of manual or professional mode is important to you, it’ll be Android which you need to turn to.

However, it’s important to note that not all Androids offer this functionality. For example, the Google Pixel range uses a similarly straightforward app to the iPhone series. Instead, look at devices from Samsung, Oppo, Sony, Honor, Xiaomi or OnePlus – and check specifications (and reviews) of any individual phone you have your eye on to make sure such a mode is offered.

There’s a plethora of third-party apps which are available for both Android and iOS. Big-name apps such as Instagram and Snapseed are available no matter which platform you choose to use.

However, there is still a wider choice of apps available for iOS. This is because it is easier and cheaper for developers to produce apps for iOS. With Android running across a huge number of different devices with a variety of screen sizes and resolutions, it’s much simpler to produce an iOS app which doesn’t have such wide-ranging permutations.

This could mean, in theory at least, that your favourite app might take a while to appear on Android – or may never appear at all.

Both Android and iOS have “special” photography modes, which are designed to help make taking pictures in certain conditions, that much easier.

Almost all smartphones these days have a Portrait mode (notable exception being Sony Xperia phones), and most also have a Night mode for shooting in low light (again the exception here being Sony Xperia). So, in that respect, Android and iOS are very well-matched.

The latest iPhones also have macro focusing modes for getting close to subjects, which is something you’ll also find on quite a few Android models now, including the Samsung S22 Ultra and the Google Pixel 7 Pro.

However, it’s fair to say that with iOS, while you do get those Portrait, Night and Macro modes, there’s very little else in the way of anything “special” or unusual. By contrast, some Android phones provide you extras right within the native camera app to play with. For example, you’ll find special “Movement” modes for the Pixel 7 range, which make it easier to take panning shots or create slow shutter speed effects.

It’s therefore worth checking the specifications of an individual device and its native camera app to see if it has any special modes which particularly appeal to you.

This is a difficult one to answer since there’s such a wide range of devices to choose between.

In days gone by, iPhones were notorious for running low on battery far quicker than their Android counterparts, but the newer models have improved to the point that it’s not so much of an issue any more.

It is however far easier to compare directly between Android models, since most will provide specific battery power specifications. Therefore, if battery life is something you’re particularly thinking about, you can take a look at listed power ratings. For iPhone, you’ll get an idea of how long they typically last by looking at the stated battery life.

Apple is a company that very much prides itself on its design ethos. However, the aesthetic quality of any design is largely a subjective opinion.

The most exact generations of iPhone have used a boxy, squarish design which some folk love, and others deride. Which you prefer is a personal choice.

What’s easier to say however is that in terms of sheer variety of design styles, then Android is better. You’ve got the boxy type designs, but there’s also those with sleeker, curvier designs. Not to mention a much broader range of colours. If you’re looking for something unusual or a bit “wacky”, you’re far more likely to find it with Android.

In more practical terms, if you’re keen for a very large screen, then you’ll find more options available at a wider range of price points if you go for an Android. The biggest iPhone are the “Pro Max” models which command high prices, whereas you can mid-range large Android models much more affordably.

Although not totally photographically rated, the seamless integration between different Apple products is something to consider if you’re already a Mac or iPad user (or you think you might be in the future). For example, you can quickly and easily AirDrop your photos from one device to the other without much fuss – integration between Androids and Macs, or Androids and Windows can sometimes be a bit tricker or flakier.

Additionally, the “iCloud” automatically syncs up your files between devices making it easy to access your photographs no matter which device you’re using. Google Photos does a very similar thing, but it’s not quite as slick.

iOS vs Android: Price

While it’s fair to say that Apple is not known for producing “cheap” products, high-end Android phones will also set you back a pretty penny these days too.

For example, as we discovered in our iPhone 14 Pro vs Samsung S22 Ultra feature, it’s actually the Samsung which is more expensive. Arguably you might consider the Samsung to provide better value for money, even though it commands a higher price, but it’s still a hefty investment.

So, when it comes to flagships, both iOS and Android are fairly evenly matched when it comes to price points.

That said, if you’re on a strict budget, it is much easier to pick up a cheap Android which still performs well. There are far more mid-range and low-cost Android options to choose from, with prices starting as low as £150 – something you simply won’t see from even older iPhones.

As usual with these comparison-type pieces, there isn’t really a straightforward answer to which is better, iPhone or Android.

Essentially, a lot of it will come down to personal preferences, what you need and how much money you’ve got to spend. Both have their advantages, and both have their advantages. It’s also difficult to provide a definitive answer when there is so much variation in the Android market.

However, if we’re pushed to decide – as a whole, we’d have to go with Androids being the better option when compared to iPhone – particularly if you’re comparing flagship models like-for-like.

A couple of days ago it was reported that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) may be in the race to acquire football club Manchester United (NYSE:MANU). I own an iPhone, I watch football matches when I can and at this moment while writing this report I have a livestream opened in one tab watching the World Cup match in Qatar between Belgium and Morocco. While I have followed Apple product developments for years and I have been raised with football, it is really hard to rhyme Apple with buying Manchester United. Maybe there is something we are missing.

Unrest at Manchester United

Right now seems to be a horrible moment to acquire Manchester United. Iconic footballer Cristiano Ronaldo recently left Manchester United. His time at the club can be described as unlucky with frequent clashes with coach Erik Ten Hag who successfully led Ajax to three consecutive titles in the Dutch competition. While taking players Antony and Lisandro Martinez with him to Manchester United, he has not been able to consistently Strengthen performance of Manchester United and the animosity between Cristiano Ronaldo and Erik Ten Hag further added to the unrest while Manchester United occupies the 5th spot in the Premier League, just one spot higher than last season's ending. The unrest climaxed with an interview from Ronaldo where he said he had no respect for the trainer and that the gap with the competition is bigger than expected.

Lack of success

The Glazer family took control of Manchester United in 2005, but big successes have remained absent. From a club such as Manchester United, winning the Premier League is a must along with success in the Champions League, the biggest and most prestigious football tournament for clubteams. Initially, there have been successes as Manchester United won the Premier League in three consecutive rows from 2007 until 2009 and after that in the season 2010-2011 and 2012-2013 with success in Europe with winning the Champions League in 2007-2008 and the Europa League in 2016-2017, but that is not enough for a club such as Manchester United. The club hasn't won the Premier League since 2014 and successes in European competitions were booked years ago. So, for the sporting successes you don't have to buy Manchester United.

Cristiano Ronaldo also slammed Manchester United stating that the training facilities had not changed since he left Manchester United for the first time more than a decade ago. Looking at financial performance, Manchester United is not quite successful either.

The company has seen its adjusted EBITDA decline since 2017, the year in which it won the Europa League. It's commercial revenues seem to be hitting a peak at roughly £275 million and in the pandemic years 2020 to 2022, revenues declined and unsurprisingly earnings also declined. So, Manchester United is a story of no success on the pitch and no success in the books.

Apple… why?

So, the big question is why would Apple be interested in Manchester United. Maybe the question that should be asked first is: why would anyone want to own a football club? The reason for many wealthy owners is: prestige. I tend to write mostly about airlines and aerospace and for airlines there is the saying about how you can become a millionaire in the airline industry: "Start out as a billionaire". The joke likely originates from Richard Branson who took over the airline we now know as Virgin Atlantic. A similar thing holds for football clubs. People with wealth don't buy football clubs because it is easy money. Often times, it is the prestige element that convinces them to own a football club pumping in millions of dollars that often do not quite pay themselves back especially for large football clubs.

Right now, we are seeing that the owner of Inditex, which owns fashion chain Zara, is interested in acquiring Manchester United but Sir Jim Ratcliffe is also interested in acquiring Manchester United and former football player David Beckham is also said to be interested in Manchester United via a consortium. All three individuals have one thing in common, they have experience with owning a football club. Amancio Ortega from Inditex owns Deportivo La Coruña active in the third division in Spain, David Beckham owns Inter Miami active in the MLS together with the Mas brothers and Ares Management while Ratcliff owns OGC Nice active in the Ligue 1. None of these owners has any experience with owning a club such as Manchester United, but Ratcliffe's plan of bringing OGC Nice to the European tournaments is running one season ahead of schedule. It is said that he normally eyeballs a three-year pay off for investment. With Manchester United likely costing around $7 billion that is unlikely to happen, but Ratcliffe has previously shown interest to acquire Chelsea after sanctions against Russia forced a change of ownership. Long story short, football clubs are often pet projects and more often than not they do fail to pay off their investment.

Apple is really the odd duckling in the group and one can wonder why they would be interested in Manchester United. Apple has an annual revenue of nearly $366 billion, so the business results that Manchester United shows is not at all interesting to them. The twelve-month trailing cash flow from operating activities is over $122 billion with $48.3 billion in cash so the tech giant can easily buy Manchester United, but one can wonder why they would even be interested in doing so.

For an answer, we have to look into Apple's diversification. In 2019, Apple launched its streaming service Apple TV+ and while Apple has no experience owning a football club this is where a big answer to Apple's potential lies. In June, Apple announced it would be streaming MLS games starting in 2023 for 10 years. This is where acquiring Manchester United could fit in: Expanding the Apple TV+ sport offering. MLS games will cost $99 per season and it is estimated that the company has 20 million to 40 million subscribers. The revenue potential for streaming games from Manchester United would be around $200 million to $400 million. That is of course assuming that everyone subscribes which will not be the case, but it serves as building block for Apple streaming services in Europe.

But Manchester United has something that other teams do not have. For years Manchester United was the most valuable football brand in the world, but absence of success in Europe and the Premier League cost them that number one spot as they are now surpassed by Real Madrid. So, if you want to have a strong brand, you need success. So, in some sense owning Manchester United is not interesting at all to Apple because the team does not perform well. However, being masters of brand value and strength Apple knows one thing and that is that Manchester United is extremely popular in Asia where there is a lot of potential for Apple TV+ streaming services. Manchester United was one of the first football clubs to strengthen its brand value in Asia and they continue doing that with training tours in Japan, Thailand and China. So, Manchester United can add appeal to Apple TV+ for people in Europe as well as Asia. Especially in Asia people feel strongly connected to brands especially Western brands, so that is where a lot of value can be unlocked.

So when it comes to streaming, there is some value in expanding the product offering but most value is likely based on expansion of the subscriber base in Europe and Asia using a strong sports brand.

Does it make sense to pay $7 billion to own Manchester United in order to expand? Hard to tell. Let's say that acquiring Manchester United will help Apple expand the subscriber base by 20 million doubling from the lowest estimate for Apple TV+ subscribers, then we would have around 7 euros in monthly revenues or $7.25 per subscriber or $1.74 billion in annual base subscription revenues plus $2 billion for a total annualized revenue of $3.72 billion. Assuming no costs, which is unrealistic, this would mean that within 2 years the $7 billion that Manchester United would cost is earned back. Assuming 25% margins, it would take 8 years. I wouldn't really consider acquiring Manchester United as an attractive deal solely for its potential to add to streaming revenues.

Is there something else that could make Manchester United attractive? One would think that some sort of Manchester United flavored Apple gadgets would do it, but I don't see Apple as the brand that would be opting to go that way as they benefit more from separated brands each with their own strengths. I also don't believe they are extremely interested in buying Manchester United to have a prominent placing on the shirt. Where I do see opportunities are with healthcare and fitness and embedding smart systems and health monitor in a closed loop with smart homes.

These days a lot of tech is involved in the highest branches of sport and Apple could be interested in applying that to the top sport level. There are talks about Apple funding a new stadium and Cristiano Ronaldo did mention that the Carlington training complex is obsolete. Tech infusion from Apple could create a sport tech complex and stadium where healthcare and fitness monitoring could be built into smart home or smart complex. That is the kind of integration that seems futuristic, but might be highly interesting. This new approach to top sport could be valuable to Manchester United but even more so to Apple, which could derive smart home fitness solutions, new consumer fitness devices and potentially set up something that would look a lot like smart training centers that could be applied in gyms but also in healthcare, medical rehabilitation and physiotherapy. It is extremely farfetched, but in some sort of healthcare oriented route with seamless smart integration with the surrounding is what I think could for Apple provide most value.

Conclusion: An odd buy for Apple with futuristic opportunities

If you look at the combination of Apple and Manchester United, it sounds like something that never will work, but maybe it is more like chocolate and mint… some people like it, some people don't see the point of it and despise it. To me, Apple acquiring Manchester United is something that has a high degree of uncertainty of success, but I could see value in acquiring Manchester United for its brand value to expand the streaming services in Europe and Asia and increase the product offering of the streaming services. Furthermore, data in top sport and data insights in fitness has become increasingly more important over the years and, while it might sound somewhat far-fetched, Apple could be using a new stadium and training complex infused with technology and smart integration to test and develop a healthcare smart home/surrounding integration as well as new software and products.

If Apple is not interested in either developing its streaming services or strengthening its healthcare and fitness products and services, they better do what Cristiano Ronaldo did, and that is to leave Manchester United for what it is… an underperforming sports team.

The App store is, sadly, no longer the jewel of Apple's ecosystem. These days, it seems to be more about maximizing Apple's revenue than serving customers or helping developers flourish.

It hasn't always been this way. Ask just about any Apple executive what makes Apple special and the answer will almost always be Apple's ecosystem — the company's (formerly) unique position of creating both the hardware and the software with tight integration. One of the lessons Apple learned from the Mac in the 90s is that the best hardware and software doesn't matter all that much without apps.

That used to mean that developers — the people who make those apps — were the most important part of any platform. (Remember former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's famously sweaty chant: "Developers! Developers! Developers!" )

Applications are what led users to a particular hardware platform and kept them there. 

Thus, the App store was born to provide iPhone's beautiful hardware and elegant operating system thousands of apps, created by programmers running their own app businesses. Apple carefully curated the apps it gave prominent display, helping the best developers gain visibility and helping users find the best choice for their needs — with Apple taking a modest 30% of all sales for their efforts maintaining the store.

Now, after 15 years of iPhones, I find the App store to be an imitation of its former self.

The first issue I have is with ads that are becoming more and more intrusive. I don't mind ads in general, but the way Apple is using them in the App store has become really annoying. For example, when I'm searching for an app, I'm bombarded with ads for other apps, and sometimes even for products that are not related to what I am looking for.

The second issue I have is with apps just taking up space. The App store hosts all manner of apps that, in my opinion, push junk. I think an egregious exact example was when gambling apps appeared in the "you might also like" section when some people searched for gambling addiction recovery apps.  Apple paused those ads last month after a developer outcry went went viral, the Verge reported. 

But I remember when Apple founder Steve Jobs boasted that the lack of ads was part of Apple's ethos. "No ads. We build products that we want for ourselves, too, and we just don't want ads," Jobs said back in 2011

While Apple does have App store guidelines that say it will reject copycat apps, developers also often complain about knock-offs of their well-known, original apps that bubble to the surface via ads, such as those that mimic popular games. 

In October, a game developer tweeted about their experiences with lookalike apps, and after that tweet went viral Apple suspended the app the developer pointed out. Apple also settled a lawsuit in September from a keyboard app developer, as AppleInsider reported. The developer had gone to great lengths to try to show how copycat apps slipped through Apple's app review system. 

This is an ongoing frustration for legit developers who now have to pay in order to make sure their stuff isn't buried beneath other stuff — including copycat apps — that Apple ads expose to users. 

Look, as a holder of Apple stock, I appreciate that Apple, driven by the ever-hungry demands of Wall Street, is using ads to increase revenue. Apple is a for-profit enterprise, after all. But as a longtime Apple customer, what I mourn are the days where the need for revenue didn't trump the need to serve customers. 

Remember back in 2010 when Apple founder Steve Jobs barred all fart apps because they offered no value to users and demeaned the ecosystem? "If it sounds like we're control freaks, well, maybe it's because we're so committed to our users and making sure they have a quality experience with our products," Jobs said.

Look at any of Apple's new devices: For the most part, they're kind of boring. An iPhone 14 looks a lot like an iPhone 13, which in turn looks a lot like iPhone 12. Whatever new features that exist are pushed only to the "Pro" classes of devices, which also carry the highest price tags and the highest profit margins. 

In October, as the world braced for a recession, Apple hiked prices on some of its most popular services such as Apple TV+ and Apple Music. There's an Apple tax on everything coming from Cupertino, whether it's price increases, only the most expensive devices getting the latest features, or the App store, which looks for revenue anywhere it can find it.

The real problem for Apple is that Apple is no longer the only game in town for users. Want to see hardware innovation? Look no further than a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 that folds from tablet to smartphone. Want to see tight integration of hardware/software/services? Look at the Pixel 7, Pixel Watch, and Pixel Buds Pro. You'll also see the latest innovations not just on a Pixel 7 Pro but on a modestly priced Pixel 7. You'll also find apps that were exclusive to Apple now available to Android users as well. 

The biggest challenge that these alternate platforms face isn't facing off against Apple's technology. It's facing off against Apple's juggernaut marketing machine.

But the irony is that Apple is becoming the very thing it used to mock going back to the Apple vs. IBM days. Or as Mel Brooks so elegantly stated "We mock the things we are to be."

FIDO2 has become a prominent touchstone in security conversations, primarily those around Zero Trust authentication. The significant increase in authentication attacks over the last several years, despite many of the breached companies having multi-factor authentication (MFA) in place, make clear that traditional, non-FIDO MFA methods have failed. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) endorses FIDO, and the Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) describes it as the “gold standard” of phishing-resistant MFA. 

FIDO2 authentication expands on the original FIDO protocols, allowing users to authenticate through a standardized interface built on public key cryptography. Google, Microsoft and Apple, with its Passkey, have announced their intent to “kill the password” through expanded support for FIDO2 authentication.

What Is FIDO?

The FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance is an open industry association committed to removing passwords from all authentication. Some of the biggest tech names (including the three companies mentioned above, Samsung, Meta and Intel) are all members of the alliance. They’re joined by regulatory bodies like the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), cybersecurity companies such as HYPR and Yubico, and financial firms including PayPal, Visa, Mastercard and Bank of America. 

FIDO-based authentication addresses the major flaws in password-based authentication (and insecure MFA methodologies such as SMS, OTPS and push notifications) by using public key cryptography for authentication and attestation. It also uses multiple modern technologies for proving factors of authentication, such as fingerprint scanning, facial recognition and voice recognition, in tandem with established solutions such as Embedded Secure Elements, smart card authentication and near-field communication (NFC).

The FIDO authentication specifications create an interoperable set of protocols that can be deployed across multiple devices and platforms.

What is FIDO2 Authentication?

FIDO2 authentication is actually the third version of the FIDO standards, building on:

  • FIDO Universal Second Factor (FIDO U2F) — a specification geared towards improving security around password-based systems by including strong  second factor capabilities.
  • FIDO Universal Authentication Framework (FIDO UAF) —a set of open protocols that allows online services to use passwordless security via mobile devices to strengthen IAM processes.

The FIDO2 authentication standards consist of two core elements:

  • The WebAuthn API — the W3C Web Authentication Standard incorporated in browsers such as Chrome, Firefox and Edge.
  • FIDO’s Client-to-Authenticator Protocol (CTAP) — provides an interface that can integrate external authenticators through USB, Bluetooth or NFC on FIDO2-capable devices.

This approach creates several benefits, including:

  • Elimination of passwords from authentication
  • Compliance with regulations such as NIST 800-63B and PSD2
  • Easy to use as users can leverage mechanisms that are already on their smart device
  • Open standard guarantees interoperability and avoids vendor lock-in
  • Scalable as it doesn’t require new equipment to be sent to staff

With its many benefits along with the buy-in from some of the world’s biggest companies, FIDO2 authentication provides the answer to many of the world’s authentication security issues.

How Does FIDO2 Authentication Work?

FIDO2 authentication uses asymmetric cryptography similar to the public-private key handshake used in the TLS protocols to authenticate websites with a web browser. However, in the case of FIDO2 authentication, when challenged to prove their identity, the user unlocks the private key, which matches the public key held on record and proves the user is who they say they are. 

A typical authentication flow will look something like this: 

  1. The FIDO-enabled device is registered with the authentication system. This happens during the set-up phase for a new user, and a public-private key pairing is made.
  2. The public key is shared with the authentication system, and the private key is kept on the user’s device, where it’s protected either by a logical keybox or a hardware security module.
  3. An authentication process will challenge the user to prove possession of the private key.
  4. A secure local action on the user’s device, such as providing a face scan or thumbprint or using a security key, will unlock the private key.
  5. The private key is used to sign the challenge, proving user possession, and if it matches the public key held by the authentication system, the user is logged in.

This system can satisfy MFA requirements in one action as it simultaneously uses different authentication factors (i.e., possession and inherence), with passwords full removed from the process. To the user, the log-in process can be as simple as looking at their smartphone without remembering or providing any additional information. 

What are the Differences Between FIDO2 and WebAuthn?

While often used together or even interchangeably, there are significant differences between WebAuthn and FIDO2 authentication. Web Authentication (WebAuthn) was developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the main international standards body for the web, in conjunction with the FIDO Alliance. It is a standardized interface for securely authenticating users for web applications using public key cryptography. 

FIDO2 authentication is a broader approach that incorporates WebAuthn and includes the FIDO CTAP standard. This integration means that the cryptographic authentication processes of WebAuthn can be expanded out to even more use cases, including devices, physical media or security keys.

FIDO2 Certification

The FIDO Alliance runs a certification program that is critical for maintaining an interoperable ecosystem of products and services deploying FIDO authentication. FIDO2 certification ensures product conformance and interoperability of all FIDO2 authentication implementations across clients, servers and authentication devices. FIDO2 Certified products undergo rigorous testing to validate that user credentials are decentralized, isolated and encrypted on user’s personal devices.

 A FIDO2-certified server has gone through a full FIDO certification program and successfully meets all requirements to work with any FIDO2-certified authenticator device. Likewise, a FIDO2 Certified authenticator is able to work with all solutions that maintain a FIDO2 server. Many solutions are certified for a single component, but few are certified across all components like HYPR.

FIDO2 and Apple Passkeys

Apple’s passkeys use Touch ID or Face ID for biometric verification, and iCloud Keychain to sync across iPhone, iPad,  Mac, and Apple TV. Passkeys are based on FIDO2 WebAuthn, providing a phishing-resistant login to websites and apps from iOS 16-enabled devices. However, passkey access to apps on a desktop or laptop requires running macOS Ventura — which is not deployed in most enterprises. Apple’s passkeys and other consumer-targeted passwordless options carry other challenges for enterprise deployment, for example it does not meet the possession requirement of SCA requirements and other compliance standards and it’s limited to Apple devices. CISOs also have to consider the feasibility of deployment and cross-platform support, which applies both to those who use non-Apple PCs but also to those whose preferred phone is Android. 

Strong, FIDO2-Certified Authentication With HYPR

Unfortunately, despite the FIDO certification program’s existence and the FIDO Alliance’s good intentions, a “FIDO Certified” authentication solution might not be what it claims to be. They often only support the FIDO2 authentication standards or have a single component certified, such as the server. This means their authentication processes may be less secure and not in compliance with FIDO standards.

Apple’s latest TV streaming box is faster, smaller, more efficient and cheaper than its predecessors, making it one of the best and most reliable smart TV experiences you can get.

The third-generation Apple TV 4K costs from £149 ($129/A$219). While £20 cheaper than last year’s model, it is still a premium over rivals from Google, Amazon and others, which are priced at between £50 and £140.

The same simple and discreet rounded black box design is now 20% smaller and about half the weight of previous versions. It comes in two versions: with or without ethernet and Thread networking, a system to connect smart home devices.

Inside there are two key changes. The newer A15 chip, the same as in the iPhone 14, is 50% faster than the A12 chip it replaces. It is far faster than all the competition and total overkill for a streaming box, unless you use it as a games console with Apple’s Arcade service or games from the App Store. Otherwise, the new chip is more energy efficient and will ensure the box stays rapid for a very long time.

The other addition is support for the HDR10+ video format, which is used by Samsung televisions and a key feature for many owners. It still supports Dolby Vision, HLG and standard HDR10 for everyone else, too.

Speed aside, the Apple TV’s killer feature is its comprehensive app support that far outstretches the competition in both availability and quality. Every major streaming service is available on it, including Amazon, Disney+, Netflix and YouTube (with Google Play Movies). It has all the UK services such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, My5, STV Player, UKTV Play, Now, BT Sport, BritBox, Sky Go and others. It is a similar story in other countries too. The apps are generally better, more stable and see more support than other platforms.

Apple’s various apps and services are integrated, of course, including TV+, Fitness+, Music, iCloud Photos and Arcade. You don’t have to use any of them, but a free Apple ID is required to use the box.

Another advantage is its simplicity and lack of ads on the homepage, which can’t be said of most other smart TV platforms. The interface looks like a smartphone screen with app icons you click on with the remote to get going. You can move the apps around so your favourites are where you want them, while a dock of sorts sits right at the top.

By default, Apple’s apps sit in this top row, but you can put whatever you like there. Hover over the Apple TV app and it will recommend content to you with big flashy pages in the background. Or you can switch it to displaying the next episode of shows, such as the next episode of Andor from Disney+ or House of Games from iPlayer, which I find more useful. Multiple user profiles within tvOS allow some of these recommendations to be customised to each member of your family, but individual apps still require you to select who is trying to watch the content on bootup.

Siri works as a universal search, accessed through a button and mic on the remote. Press and hold the button to ask for a show or movie via voice to find where it is available based on the apps you have installed. If you don’t already have access to the content, it will show you the price to rent or buy it from Apple.

The voice assistant can also open apps, control playback, answer content-related questions and control smart home devices, but occasionally you’ll run into questions it can’t answer on the TV that it will on an iPhone, which is a bit odd.

The Apple TV can be used without any other Apple devices, but if you’re an Android-only user there are better options from Google or Amazon available.

If you do have an iPhone or iPad, it unlocks some very handy features. You can instantly set up the Apple TV just using an iPhone, use it as a full remote, use the keyboard on your phone or tablet to enter text and passwords, or confirm purchases with your face or thumb, among other bits. You can also send video and audio from Apple devices to the TV via AirPlay 2, but it does not support Google’s Cast.

While you can connect any Bluetooth headphones for private listening, more than one compatible set of Apple’s AirPods or Beats headphones can be used at the same time, which is extremely handy for late-night movie marathons with another person.

The Apple TV 4K contains recycled aluminium, gold, tin and plastic. Apple breaks down the streaming box’s environmental impact in its report. It consumes about 0.002kWh of electricity per hour of 4K HDR video streaming. The box is generally repairable, costing from £125 out of warranty to fix. Apple offers trade-in and free recycling schemes, including for non-Apple products.

Price

The Apple TV 4K 2022 comes in two versions starting at £149 ($129/A$219) with 64GB of storage or £169 ($149/A$249) with 128GB of storage and an additional ethernet port and Thread networking support.

For comparison, the Nvidia Shield TV costs £105, the Google Chromecast with Google TV 4K costs £60, the Roku Streaming Stick+ costs £45 and the Amazon Fire TV Cube costs £140.

Verdict

There are cheaper streaming boxes available, and every television comes with a smart TV built in. But if you want a simple, reliable and high-quality streamer, the third-gen Apple TV 4K is unbeatable.

It is very fast. It has the broadest catalogue of streaming apps available, which are typically better than on any other platform, too. It supports all the key video formats and Dolby Atmos. And there aren’t adverts cluttering up your home screen.

It is particularly good if you’re an Apple user already. While you can use it without an iPhone or iPad, there are easier options for Android users from Amazon and Google.

Don’t buy this if you have a perfectly good Apple TV currently running fine. It runs the same software with most of the same features. But if you’re sick of a poor smart TV interface and want a premium experience to deliver the quality content you already pay for, this is it.

Pros: widest streaming app support, good remote, Dolby Vision/Atmos, HDR10/10+, AirPlay 2, full iPhone/Apple services integration, Siri voice control, connect two pairs of AirPods at the same time for private listening, no third-party ads on the home screen, long software support.

Cons: expensive, no Google Cast, not as easy to use with Android, not as small and discreet as some rivals.

There's been no response yet from Apple on Musk's claims, but removing apps from the app store is a move typically reserved for egregious violations. If the Twitter app were pulled, the social network would lose one of its main distribution platforms.

A new feature in macOS Ventura, Apple's Continuity Camera enables Mac customers to use their iPhone as a webcam. With the integration, Webex users can use the camera system on iPhone to unlock video effects like Center Stage, Portrait Mode, and Studio Light.

Webex also supports Desk View in macOS Ventura. It acts like an overhead camera without the need for complicated equipment, showing the user’s face and desk simultaneously.

Senator Josh Hawley has written an open letter to Apple's Tim Cook, and amongst other topics, is accusing the company of helping China suppress free speech.

Hawley has previously said that Cook, and Google's Sundar Pichai, be held personally accountable over privacy issues to do with coronavirus contact tracing. Now he says that Apple should cut its dependency on China, bring work back to the US — and also should not ban Twitter.

"[U]nder your leadership, Apple has time and again assisted the Chinese Communist Party in surveilling and suppressing the basic human rights of the Chinese people," he wrote. "At the same time, it appears that Apple might be importing this model of speech control to the United States: reports indicate that your company might deplatform Twitter from the App Store as a consequence of the free speech policies implemented by new ownership."

The Republican Missouri senator has presented Apple with a list of questions, and a deadline of December 6, 2022, to respond. The questions cover:

  • When will Apple condemn the treatment of workers in Zhengzhou?
  • Why has it not already condemned this treatment?
  • What are the "material risks" in Apple's continued dependency on China?
  • If China invaded Taiwan, what impact would this have on Apple?
  • Why did Apple limit AirDrop in China?

As far as Zhengzhou's factory goes, after the rioting started, Apple sent a team to assess the situation. It's not clear what else Hawley wants from Apple in this regard other than perhaps a more vociferous statement.

Apple has also been clear over the years about "material risks" in China, as detailed by SEC filings from the last decade.

It's not clear why Hawley believes that should Apple decide to remove Twitter from the app store for violating terms of service likely related to moderation, that would be "deplatforming." Effective good-faith moderation by all online services is required to qualify for Section 230 protections against user-generated content in the US. A lack of moderation in a hosted app is not a major legal liability for the hosting App Store in the US, but exposes Apple to giant liabilities internationally, given that Twitter is a global service.

Additionally, even if pulled from the App Store, the service would still be available to all previous app downloaders, and on Safari as well.

Senator Hawley also repeatedly asks how Apple communicates information about these issues to its stakeholders. Other than routine SEC filings where it does address these problems, it holds an annual shareholders' meeting,

He also wants Apple to detail its "plan to diversify its supply chain and production networks, including any plans to expand manufacturing of its products in the United States with American workers."

He further asks that the company "provide all communication between Apple and Chinese Communist Party officials concerning the AirDrop feature in the iOS 16.1.1 update."

AirDrop was limited in China for what Apple called testing, before the exact protests. Apple says that it is a world-wide change coming soon, to prevent a setting set by a user perhaps long ago, from allowing the unwilling receipt of nudes or other objectionable content while in public.

Apple has not yet responded publicly, nor are we expecting it to. It's not clear if Apple will respond to Hawley's letter at all.
