The calendar has turned to December and that means Apple has only one month left to fulfill its promises of releasing an Apple Music Classical app and expanding its self-service repair program to Europe before the end of 2022. Delays are always possible, of course, so the plans could be pushed back to 2023. In any case, we have put together a list of five things that Apple still has to release over the next several months.

iOS 16.2

iOS 16.2 is currently in beta and is expected to be released in mid-December. The software update includes several new features for the iPhone, including Apple's whiteboard app Freeform, new always-on display settings for iPhone 14 Pro models, new Home app architecture, Live Activities for select sports games via the Apple TV app, new Sleep and Medications widgets for the Lock Screen, 5G support in India, and more.

Apple also plans to release iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, watchOS 9.2, and tvOS 16.2 this month. iPadOS 16.2 reenables external display support for Stage Manager on iPads with M1 or M2 chips. On the Apple TV, tvOS 16.2 introduces multi-user Siri voice recognition for personalized usage, with support for up to six family members.

Apple Pay Later

On the iOS 16 features page, Apple says Apple Pay Later is coming in a future software update for qualifying applicants in the U.S. and may not be available in all states. There has been no sign of Apple Pay Later in the iOS 16.2 betas so far and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has suggested that the feature might not launch until 2023.

Apple Music Classical

While there is still no sign of the Apple Music Classical app, evidence of the app was spotted in both iOS 15.5 code and in an XML file on Apple's servers earlier this year. Few other details are known about the app, including whether it will be a built-in app or released on the App Store as a standalone obtain given its niche purpose.

Even if Apple Music Classical is not a preinstalled app, it appears that the app will have system-level integration, so its release will likely come alongside a software update such as iOS 16.2 later this year if Apple meets its 2022 deadline. However, time is starting to run out, so it is possible that Apple Music Classical is delayed.

Apple Card Savings Account

The savings account was listed in the release notes for the iOS 16.1 Release Candidate, but it did not end up launching with that update. The savings account has not been present in any iOS 16.2 betas, so it's unclear when it will launch.

Once the account is set up, all Daily Cash received from that point on would be automatically deposited into it and start earning interest, unless a user opts to continue having Daily Cash added to their Apple Cash balance. Apple Card provides 2-3% Daily Cash on purchases made with Apple Pay and 1% on purchases made with the physical card.

Launched in 2019, Apple's credit card remains exclusive to the United States.

Self-Service Repair Program Expansion

The program first launched in April, providing customers in the U.S. with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and manuals to complete do-it-yourself repairs of iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and third-generation iPhone SE models. The program was expanded in August to include MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with the M1 series of chips.

Tesla is teasing the integration of an Apple Music app into its vehicle software, and the info came from an interesting place.

While most other automakers are turning to phone mirroring with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to handle media playback inside their cars, Tesla is insisting on integrating music services and other apps directly into its own user interface.

For years now, the automaker has been integrating different music streaming services directly inside its vehicles with apps built to work on its center displays.

Most famously, Tesla has integrated Spotify into its vehicles as the main music streaming app.

Last year, the automaker also integrated Tidal.

Tesla has been talking about adding a few other major ones, like Apple Music and Amazon Music, for years now, but it has yet to happen.

Now it looks like Tesla owners could be on the verge of getting an Apple Music app as Tesla has been spotted running the app on its own internal vehicles.

Interestingly, the information comes from people going to the Petersen Museum, a car museum in Los Angeles that currently has an exhibit in partnership with Tesla that includes several prototype vehicles, including the Roadster and Cybertruck.

Some people spotted that Tesla is running software inside some of those vehicles that includes an Apple Music app (via Reddit):

The app appears to be fully functional inside Tesla’s own vehicles, but the feature is currently not available to customers.

Tesla generally plans a big “holiday update” in late November or December that includes a lot of new features. It’s possible that Tesla is waiting for that update to pass the Apple Music app onto customers.

With more music apps inside its vehicles, Tesla has made changes to its user interface inside its vehicles in latest software updates in order to more easily manage your music apps and quickly access your main one.

After a month of beta testing iOS 16.2, Apple is seeding iOS 16.2 Release Candidate version, which means this will likely be the build the company will make available to all users in the next week. Here are the top features you should expect Apple to introduce to iPhone users soon.

iOS 16.2 RC comes alongside Release Candidate versions of iPadOS 16.2, watchOS 9.2, tvOS 16.2, and macOS Ventura 13.1. Here are some of the features users should expect to see on their iPhones starting next week:

1. New architecture for the Home app;
2. The ability to keep Live Activities updated more frequently;
3. Apple New Integration in Weather app with regional stories;
4. Sleep and Medications widget coming soon;
5. Improved Always-On display for iPhone 14 Pro users.

One of the most important functions coming with iOS 16.2 is Freeform. This app is a white canvas that iPadOS 16.2 and macOS Ventura 13.1 users will also be able to take advantage of. It was introduced during the WWDC 2022 keynote, and at that time, Apple said it would launch this feature later in 2022.

Apple calls this app “a powerful new collaboration application with a flexible canvas that allows users to see, share, and collaborate all in one place without worrying about layouts and page sizes, and with full support for Apple Pencil.

In addition to Freeform, iPadOS 16.2 brings support to external displays again. This feature was supposed to be available alongside the Stage Manager release. Still, due to bugs and users’ complaints, Apple launched Stage Manager without support for an external display with iPadOS 16.1. Now beta testers can experience Stage Manager with an external display on M1 and M2 iPads again.

Yesterday, Apple announced that Apple Music Sing, a sing-along experience for users to take advantage of while using the streaming service, would be available later this month. In today’s RC notes, the company says it’s now live.

Ericsson today announced it has reached a patent license agreement with Apple that will settle a long-running dispute between the two companies over patents related to cellular technology.

The dispute dates back to early 2015 when the two companies sued each other over dozens of Ericsson patents related to cellular technology used in Apple products such as the iPhone and iPad.

The companies reached a seven-year patent licensing agreement in late 2015 that appeared to put an end to the dispute, but it was revived in late 2021 and early 2022 as the 2015 agreement neared its end and the companies were unable to agree on terms for extending the agreement and incorporating additional patents related to newer 5G technology.

With today's announcement, Ericsson and Apple have entered into a new multi-year agreement for cross-licensing cellular-related patents and additional patent rights.

Christina Petersson, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Ericsson says: “We are pleased to settle the litigations with Apple with this agreement, which is of strategic importance to our 5G licensing program. This will allow both companies to continue to focus on bringing the best technology to the global market.”

In addition to the patent licensing, the agreement also includes commitments from both companies to strengthen their existing collaborations, "including in technology, interoperability and standards development."

Many of Apple’s services, such as Apple Music, Apple TV, and iCloud for Photos, can be accessed on Windows PCs, but the process isn’t nearly as seamless as it is on a Mac. However, Microsoft announced that it’s going to get a lot easier.

During its Surface event, Microsoft revealed that the Windows 11 Microsoft Photos app will soon have the ability to directly access Apple’s iCloud Photo Library. iPhone users will be able to sync photos and manage their library on their PC just like they can on a Mac.

Update Nov. 9: Microsoft announced that it has begun its rollout of iCloud Photos integration in Windows 11. To get the update, Windows 11 users need to install a Microsoft Store update to the Photos app, as well as iCloud for Windows.

Microsoft also announced that Apple Music and Apple TV desktop apps will be available for Windows sometime next year. That’s a relief for Windows users who have had to access Apple TV+ and Apple Music through the web. The new Apple Music is used for music access, but other services such as podcasts and books still need the iTunes for Windows app.

Xbox users can get the new Apple Music app right now in the Xbox Console Apps Store and use it to play music in the background while playing games. It goes along with the Apple TV app that’s already available.

Apple has made it clear that it wants its Services division to grow, and it is having success with that, with strong revenue growth over the past couple of years. To continue that growth, Apple needs to look beyond its ecosystem and make improvements. While Apple TV, Apple Music, and iCloud for Photos were always accessible by Windows, none of the services offered direct, easy access. These moves should help users who were discouraged by the seeming lack of effort by Apple to optimize access outside its ecosystem.
